First and foremost Steam is not supporting any OS older than Windows 10. If you missed the news from last year, that is on you. I guess there will be a window of 1 to 2 years when Win 10 support will end as well. If your PC is that old, then start collecting cash for a new one.

All software works this way. Once an OS is discontinued no software officially supports it as they can't guarantee the software will remain functional. They won't purposely kill it but they can't guarantee it remains functional down the road. That being said its still years before you have to worry about steam not working on Windows 10

Or switch to Linux because it doesn't make sense to turn a 5 year old computer into e-waste.

Possible, but Linux requires active fidling and is not supported by most games. That OS is perfect for the Dark web => the user needs a lot of programing skill to operate. Most people don't have the time or the motivation.

I haven't had a single problem running any game on my Debian Trixie (now Forky) laptop or my Steam Deck that I didn't also have on Windows 10.

I'm probably playing different games than you, but the only stuff that I've had to tinker with is stuff I personally broke or developed.
