Why is it so outrageous? As far as I gather, this option was there for a LONG time.

You've been on Steam for, what? 13 years?

And only now noticed that optional field?

why do people always get so whiny mad over something completely optional.

also oh no.. I put my name on my steam profile, Mike.. now I'm gonna have strangers at my doorstep trying to kill me or worse.
14 years on Steam and you're now complaining about something which has been there since before you created your account. I guess it must be a slow Wednesday...

You don't have to enter your real name. It's optional.
Cant you just put your name in your profile if you choose ?

he thinks its not optional cause all the news about a lot of countries and platforms hammering down on internet privacy, like youtube and UK for 2examples age verification and so on and on, how things are going in ccp/1984 direction

seems this madness is starting to make ppl sensitive

Well that definitely sounds like something that shouldn't be encouraged.

why did you wait over a decade to post this?

Well, if you look around, many people post everything anyway on their profiles. Starting with interior designs, rig photos, vacation spots, half-naked pictures, their diseases and even various personal and religious preferences. Some even their accoutname.

Rule no. 1 for building social networks:
Design the platform in such a way that users disclose everything as voluntarily as possible and never have the feeling of being forced. The realname is also only optional here.

Facebook and countless other platforms have already proven that it works and Steam is also a prime example with all the unnecessary bloat functions. This also includes the forum section.
