The 90's had plenty of games that were ~$80.

Correct.
Doesn't sting any less when you end up with ai slop games that are poorly optimized.
That is why you have to pick the one or two games every year that are stellar and play those.
As an adult $80 shouldn't be anything you even need to think about ...
Let's be fair, $80 on a luxury when your budget is tight (because say you are new to the world of adulting and thus extra money isn't something that people often have. For example) yeah as you rise in position and get raises your disposable income will increase and you can buy games.
The BWed talking point is, "but muh inflation." Wrong for two reasons:
1.) Wages aren't increasing with inflation, so expecting people's entertainment budget to do so is laughable
2.) Games have introduced more than one alternative form of monetization that more than makes up for the difference in inflation vs base price
Yeah, but look at it this way. Game dev payrises are reliant on game prices keeping pace with inflation, otherwise you're effectively asking game devs to cut their lifestyle/take a pay cut for the pleasure of making games for you.
The reason that pay rises in most western countries haven't been keeping pace with inflation for the last 30 years is because they've been electing liberal governments rather than pro-worker governments. "Lets cut taxes for big business, we'll cut services for everyone else to pay for it."
Meanwhile, an indie or AA studio puts out a fun game (unlike the paint-by-numbers slop that AAAs are putting out), and it sells boatloads and becomes an overnight breakout success (e.g., Palworld, Hell Divers 2, Expedition 33).
Things are course correcting already. Whether AAAs want to be on the boat or not is up to them.
On top of you don't even own the game.
And for people who are like. I support the devs!!!!!! ERRRG
The devs for Fields of Mistria were all fired and the studio closed before the game even released.
Purchasing is voluntary not mandatory.
