They just want your credit card

They're legally forced to have the requirement.

Valve Corp. really?

What? Did you want them to demand selfies and all your personal information alongside an anal probe? Be grateful they just want a credit card registered to your account. And if you don't like it, complain to your MP and remember to vote next time for a party that will put a stop to the Orwellian nightmare the UK is becoming.

Not specifically that they should use CC information, the law states that the method used must be accurate and robust.
I would say, an account that is older than the required age is as robust and accurate as it gets.

No, as you can see in pictures attached, I expected Valve to do the basic math.

Petition your government to add an exclusion to the law exempting accounts of a certain age. Otherwise, it's an irrelevant data point to how the law is written.

It is possible for someone to use someone else's account. Like a younger sibling using the computer and being on their older sibling's account. And other scenarios.

They're not going to. As there is no correlation to account age and current owner. For all they know, you hijacked the account or purchased it from someone else. Valid credit card number, like a selfie, proves more that YOU are of the right age, not the account you are using.

Sadly account age doesn't say anything to the account holder, since secondary markets that sell older accounts exist. That and people sharing accounts, giving away accounts, inheriting them, etc.

They need a method to verify at least "someone" behind the account is of minimum age. Not the account itself.

Again, thank the law.

Law does not require specific method, it requires for it to be robust and accurate.

It is also possible to use parents CC, especially as it does not require purchase.

Same goes for selfie those are easily spoofed (instructions can be found online with 1 google search) or CCs "borrowed" from parents.

Lets be honest there is no practical 100% correct method, apart from showing up in-person. So account age is as good as any other method.

And Valve have decided that they want to use credit cards as the method they consider to be good. As a credit card is more easily tied to a specific individual. If you're using someone else's card, you're committing payment fraud. If you don't like it, again, complain to your MP.

If you consider no method to be robust, then inform Valve. Their lawyers can then determine that they will have to simple cease allowing you any access to that content whatsoever until a robust method can be found. Seriously, be grateful all they want is a credit card. Or are you telling us you don't have and cannot get a credit card?

Oh, wow, I didn't notice that... :steamfacepalm:

Purpose of the discussion was to draw attention, that there is a possibility to add an additional easier solution for a group of steam users, other than adding credit card.
wait, they want you to "register" a card? or we talking saving it as a payment method?

in any case, having your CC info saved on a site, or anywhere, be it steam or not, isnt a smart idea, hopefully its just the "verification" part, without saving payment details.

but also, thinking about this, are people from the UK now screwed over, from using refillable, or gift cards for buying stuff? assuming they have to keep an actual CC "registered".

have a nice day peeps

You sound like an avid "Online Safety Act" supporter.

Also, in fact they don't require specifically credit card, but ANY card (incl. debit cards like VISA Debit) that can be acquired by any person, including minors. So not sure why wouldn't account age be sufficient.
