Steam has become indundated with shovelware.
As the titles says, Steam is up to it's neck in asset flips, brainless hentai slop and other fodder with quality below most free github and itch.io projects. Quality control is non-existent. Are people actually buying all that junk?

Shovel-ware harkens back to a time long forgotten and it warms my heart to see it.

If only they would re-release all the olde shovel-ware from back in the 80's and 90's, that would be so amazing. I mean they re-release all these other older games, a company needs to re-release all olde shovel-ware. I have to admit, I'd buy the olde shovel-ware. I legit would love to play all the 80's and 90's shovel-ware.

I would imagine legitimate developers, developers that are actually serious about releasing profitable software, must absolutely hate this situation. It's takes a lot of effort to get your product recognized, only to be drowned out by dung. For every (for example) Faster than Light level of quality, indie budget game, we get dozens if not hundreds of Life with a Homunculus quality and themed games. How is sheer volume of feces indicative of a good digestion?

I don't know, "level of quality" is subjective. Most games I like are the ones that aren't the popular titles.

I found this one little game a while ago about Tea. You play as Tea people and you fight Coffee people. I love tea, so I had to buy it. It's extremely unnoticed and it doesn't look like anyone even bought it. But I love it! In someone's definition that game could be shovel-ware, in which case I never would have been able to buy it. I absolutely adore it too.

I think all game's should be able to get a chance to sell on Steam or have a store to sell their games one. I never had an issue with "shovel-ware" getting in the way of finding games I wanted.

Steam is a Store, have $100 then you can have a store front.
What is Valve supposed to? If people continue to choose to buy from Ubisoft, that isn't really Steam's fault.

Given the very first third-party game sold on Steam was Rag Doll Kungfu, there has never been ANY quality control on Steam, so why are you surprised that 20 years later, it's still the same?

You totally are right, but Rag doll kung fu is like the most polished game ever released compared to the daily drivel we see now. Heck those garbage madball games are a cut above even, by comparison to most of these releases I'm referring to.

Whose definition of shovel-ware are we using?

These people never learn ...

Toss away your rose-tinted glasses, they're broken.

My point exactly. Slop hasn't gotten worse, people just remember RDK as being far better than it ever was.

Steam just needs better standards in my opinion, it doesn't have to stop everything, RPGMaker games are ok but the crap above is just taking up space on steams servers..

I love the argumentative people on steam forums. So rag doll kung fu sucked. How does that change any of what we're talking about. My rose tinted glasses are 20/20. That was one game, not countless, and people actually played it.

Who are these people who will never learn, and what lesson is it that will never be learned?
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.
