Team Fortress 2 is in my opinion the best free game around and one of the best PC games of all time. Also, I recommend that you try this (Obviously free) Source mod called Pirates, Vikings, and Knights II.

Pirates, Vikings, and Knights II is one mod. I know, it's a mouthful of a name lol. People usually just call it PVKII or PVK2. As for the playerbase, I wouldn't call it very big, but it has enough people.

Dungeons of Dredmor is one of my favorite games to come out recently. Great fun if you don't mind the 16-bit graphics style. Tribes Ascend is free, and a blast to play.
