Steam blocking overlay in Fallout/Fallout2?
Is there, by any chance, a possibility that Steam itself is blocking steam overlay in classic Fallout games? Here is the problem:

Steam overlay is supposed to work with DX7 and above or OpenGL. Current steam version of both Fallout and Fallout 2 contains an HR patch to render the game in DX9 and bigger resolutions than standard 640x480. Overlay doesnt work though. However, when I add game executable as a non-steam game, steam overlay DOES work.

Steam is launching Fallout(2 respectively)Launcher.exe prior launching the game itself by default (and thus breaking playtime counter, as after launcher closes, hours are not being counted). This can be fixed by renaming game executable to FalloutLauncher.exe so that steam will open the game engine directly (and thus fixing playtime counter).

My point is - when tweaked this way, the game is being started absolutely the same way as non-steam shortcut made out of the same executable. Why is overlay not working in regular game, when it does work with shortcut then? Is there a possibility that steam itself turned this functionality off for these games? Because I see no other reason for it not to work.

Some older games as Fallout 3, Mafia, Mass effect, etc has faulty steam overlay. It is up to the dev's to implement the overlay correctly, but some simply does not care.

One solution for some of these games is to launch Steam as a admin, that fixes the overlay problem for Fallout 3, Mass effect and Mafia.

Hope it helps in some way?

Hmmm. Admin rights fixed overlay in Fallout 3, thanks, didnt know that :D No difference in Fallout nor Fallout 2 though. You see, I do understand that older games have their specific problems with newer-date technology as steam overlay, but I dont think this is the case, for as I stated in original post, overlay does work when launching the game as non-steam shortcut. Which is why I doubt it is game-related issue, I would suspect steam software itself.

The overlay works if you launch the exes as a non-Steam game but not as a Steam game.
