Constant crashes from a Specific Game
So here is my situation - afew days ago one specific game seemed to simply stop working. The game is Tabletop Simulator, which I have nearly 2k hours invested in.

The problem is this, I cant launch it, or even click on it in the library, I cannot open properties because steam just crashes.

Logging into admin does not help, going into offline mode does not help. I cant verify the game files because I cant open properties.

I have updated my drivers, I have reinstalled Microsoft Visual C++, I have uninstalled and reinstalled the game.

I can launch the game by launching the application from the commons file in steamapps, but that does not amount to much because when you do so, it does not log you into steam and therefore you cant play it anyway.

The only thing that makes it work again is to completely remove all files for the game from my computer, than uninstalling and reinstalling steam itself, then I can launch and play the game once before the issue resurfaces.

Hmm, the last time I saw issues like this where games stopped working and they couldn't even open properties it was down to viruses.

So have you got your antivirus set up correctly and it's regularly updated?
I haev to ask.

Yes, my antivirus is up to date, and set up correctly. Atleast as far as I can afford.

So the next question to ask is what do you mean about you can't bring up properties?

What ACTUALLY happens when you try? Can you right click on the game. What EXACTLY happens.

Alright, I right-click on the game in the library. The second I touch it, Steam freezes and becomes un-responsive- it just locks up and then shuts down moments later. It baffles me honestly, I am at a loss as to how touching the game on the list would cause such a reaction.

Oh dear.

That still makes me wonder about the virus as that is the sort of behaviour one can get.

But that does give me more info to go on, and I'm beginning to suspect your hard drive could be going wonky.

Have you tried either installing this game on another drive and seeing if it works, or have you done any drive checking of late?

I'd recommend an INTENSIVE scan, that should take a couple of hours (depending on the drive size). It will then give you a more detailed report than a quick Windows built in scan, and can even quarantine bad sectors and so on.

The computer is a laptop that only has one drive unfortunately. I have run the windows scan and it was cleared but I suppose I could do something more intensive.

I am currently looking into whether it could be a virus and am launching a full system scan. The simplest solution is often the correction one after all. Thank you for your assistance thus far, after hours of scouring for insight online, I did not come across anything relating to the issue - let alone suggest it could be a virus.

Wow, I wish everyone was as logical and receptive as you!

Do let us know how you get on. I'm sure we'll get to the bottom of it eventually.

So after 15 hours of various virus scans (including a boot-time scan) and systems diagnosis's, I can report that there is evidentially nothing wrong. No viruses, No Malware, and the hardware checked out to be good.

However the crash still happens, every time... I did manage to open properties once and click verify integrity game files, but it crashed at 8%... I am just at a loss. I have never hoped to have actually had an infection on a computer, and was actually disappointed that it came up clean.

Browse to game folder and click its game.exe , what crash msg do you get.
The Omnilord 14 Oct, 2020 @ 8:25am
If you are asking me to launch the game from its game folder in steamapps/common - then that is the only time the game actually opens, so there is no crash msg. The problem with that is, the game requires a steam connection to play, and it crashes when I open it through steam.

I have never received a error/crash message from it, it simply stops responding.

well thats a odd one , have you change security sense last time use app or update something.

if steam.exe dont help on the antivirus exclusion list then you are in trouble.

you can try windows event viewer , not sure any here can help you without something to work with.

ofc. ask own game forum or game devs support. can be a very good idea.

ps.
feel frtee to update all drivrers. special nvidia in custom mode , and make clear install thats standard with nvidia then that run into trouble , but even i cant say its that.

Well, thank you, I appreciate the assistance, I will try to check into drivers again.

I cant help but speculate that the issue is with steam somehow, as I can launch the game independently of it, but I cant wrap my head around why its only this particular game that's effected. A game I have spent countless hours on, and used the night before it stopped working, only to have it suddenly... well, just stop.
Iceira 14 Oct, 2020 @ 9:37am
I agree with you, with that many hours as you say you did, you most know if you change something sense last time, i see no point sit nd ask havre you set any steam.exe option or other installed app sense last itme you play it.

and without any crash popup or log , it almost impossible to guess on.

ps.

its actual up to you if you want try more ways to figure it out.

rename folder name.old ( same with user data if such is there. reinstall game again, this is to ruleout change or mods or as Original as possible , but that wont fix system if error comes from there.

and you still end up with best guess. ( some game devs even have own menu launcher do check bin folder if game has its .exe there. but as i recall tabletop do have own game menu and they could make same mistake as steam client and silence the crash msg. again you need to figure that out or ask them.

So, is it possible for ones cloud to be glitched or something? I just burrowed a brand new laptop, I downloaded Steam, I logged in, I installed the game... and it still crashes! The exact same thing, I cannot access the games properties, and I cannot even touch it in the library without it crashing.
