So according to the TOS, what would happen if Steam closed?
Would we lose all our stuff? Or will we keep everything?

1. will not happen.
2. the drm portion of steam is easy to remove, even on some titles from user-end.

desura managed it to stay alive since may 2015 despite being filed for bankruptcy. Valve stated that they will find a solution if this happens, which again .. they are the industry leader, will not happen.

There is also a small fact that for many of us, local laws would force what remains of Valve to find a solution.

I'm sure Valve won't shut down for many years still, it was just something that's been bugging me for the last few days. Thanks for the answers.

That's only relevant if there's a Valve left that can be forced.

But three scenarios:
Steam is successful, yet Valve goes broke: Third party takes over Steam and continues the service.
Steam fails due to everybody moved on, Valve closes it: no-one but a few die-hards care, they get a standalone, off line steam client and a grace period to download everything.
Steam fails due to everybody moved on, Valve fails along with it: no-one but a few die-hards care, they're screwed.

Which is what I meant when writing that whats left of Valve around the time of their bunkrupcy will have to deal with it.
A company like Valve will not simply fall over night with no way of them to do anything.

They're probably not going anywhere, however - this is the problem with non physical structures.

I have Playstation 1 games that are 20 years old.
I pop them in - and they work, and they always will.

Try popping in time crisis and plug in the light gun on a modern TV...

Heck, try plugging in a Playstation into a recent low/medium budget model TV.

I've got 2 playstation 2s plugged into two different TVs right now.

FYI - Playstation 1 games play on Playstation 2 consoles, and use component .Also here's my list of PS/PS2 games - not one of them use a light gun.

The whole digital gaming industry would have to collapse in order for Steam to become unviable because only in that scenario would there be no companies willing to acquire it.
Or in the situation where Steam does fail and no repercusions are made. Digital gaming industry might be under threat.
Not many poeple would trust getting digital product after the loss of 100+ games.
