Internet problem.
Hello, recently a new, faster internet was installed at my place. Its speed should reach 1 Gb/s, but on Steam, the maximum speed I get is 20 Mb/s, and it often drops to 2 Mb/s. How can I solve this problem?

I am not an expert in these matters, which is why I am asking for your help. I thought it would reach very high speeds, even more than 100 Mb/s.

8 bits are 1 byte.

Steam shows speeds in byte/s

1GBit/s = 125 MByte/s

100 MByte/s is an acceptable speed for this connection.

It's down to your:
* Storage device
* CPU
* Anti-virus or other kernel-level drivers
* ISP

Pick one (or multiple).

Steam downloads and installs at the same time.

1. Downloading the encrypted and compressed chunk (Internet)
2. Decrypting and unpacking the chunk (Disk)
3. Applying the diff delta to a new copy of the patched file (Disk) [if it's a patch]
4. Deleting the previous now outdated copy of the file (Disk) [if it's a patch]

Either usage limits the other: Slower internet slows down disk progress, slow disk progress slows down chunk download.

I don't understand any of this

I checked on the website to measure the speed of the internet and it came out
And here are the results
download in Mb/s
823.97

Mb/s upload
306.64

and on steam the download speed of the game is 30Mb/s and almost constantly 1-10Mb/s should not be like that

It is likely that your download speed is being thottled by your PC.

Download/Upload speed test is test of your network speed. This is not indication of your PC performance.

Take note that Steam game download files are highly compressed packages. This means that it requires more resource of your disk and CPU to unpack. In process of unpacking the packages, download may stop or slow down. Using SSD instead of HDD greatly increases performance in this regard.

Also, Steam game download servers may have their own speed caps (as I've heard).

You are absolutely correct, It should not be like that. Steam throttles your downloads based on how many people are active and using data on your local server. It isnt a problem with your PC and internet. This is a broken steam issue that has existed for a long time. I have fiber and still get throttled to about 25mb download speeds. Even Ubisoft Connect is better than Steam in this regard

Your ISP can also limit your speed depending on how much you download a day or how many people are using your internet at your home. Check your ISP rules to see if they do this. Most put this in the fine print in the contract to try to fool people.

Is anyone else using ethernet cable connection at home?????

Ethernet cable internet connection takes precedence over wi fi connection.

In other words, wired connection takes priority over wireless connection

So this could be a problem with my laptop?

I checked on other platforms how games download and it was the same, first it was 50 Mb/s and after a second it drops to slow speeds, I think there is something that blocks the speed. But when I test the speed of the internet on some sites etc it is 1Gb/s speed
tuka 1 Aug, 2024 @ 11:17am
not once on Steam and other platforms did the speed exceed 50Mb/s

This is actually correct. I noticed this myself in the past. I actually use Ethernet cords more than WIFI, even though WIFI has it's advantages, but i notice it goes out alot where i live due to power outages, so i decided to use ethernet cords for the most part.

I have gigabit connection, if i download to my slower hdd i get roughly 40 to 50MBps, if i download to my NVME i get a consistent 114MBps. as steam downloads and installs same time the drive speed affects overall speed. my sons pc which is low spec only gets 20MBps downloads to his hdd.

How to increase download speed:
IF WesternDigital NVMe > Turn off Write Caching on the Device (test if other brand, might help)
> Turn off Bitlocker Encryption (60% ssd slowdown + another encrypt/decrypt step before loading the file)
IF AMD CPU > Turn off fTPM (bios)
> Set NetworkThrottlingIndex to ffffffff
> Set Power Manageman Plan to Performance
> Turn off Power Saving on the Network Controller
> Turn off "power efficiency" features on the Network controller.
> Turn off File Indexing on the SSD

that's the summary.
you can finetune / increase the speed slightly even further up, but this is probably most of the reasons why your download is slower.
