SteamCMD app_status unreliable for update information
Hi,

I am hosting an Ark Survival Evolved dedicated server. The developers update the game fairly often and at different times. So I got the idea of an automatic update check using SteamCMD.

Sadly the command app_status tells me only that it is fully installed and not that there is an update available (even if there is one). Is there a way to force SteamCMD to get the latest information about a game without updating the game in the process?

The game is installed into another directory which I always set through force_install_dir before I execute app_status

Why would you want not to update?

Because the game server is running. When there is an update, do the following:
1. Shut down server
2. Update server
3. Start server

Ah, I see.
Hm... You should ask in the SteamCMD forum.

The server needs a certain command line to start and the script doesn't know of there's an update when it starts. This means that it would shut down the server without telling the players first. And if it doesn't restart automatically, I have no idea what happens when the process tries to read an updated file... No that's a bad idea :)

I set up a script to restart the server once every day and run an update. But I wanted to improve that.

Don't the Ark guys have a mailing list or something similar?

There are community made scripts available but they use steamCMD as well. A window tool uses an external API but I can't get unversioned hotfixes this way. And not every update is also for the server.

That's why you have to actually read the content of the mailing list.

There's a forum post but it's accessible only to people who own the game. That makes accesing it a little more complicated.

Well, ask in the SteamCMD forum if there's a solution available.

Where can I find it?

Have you ever noticed how there are tabs on top of the main forums landing page?

There's whether a SteamCMD forum nor something related. I posted it in source dedicated server for linux even though it's an Unreal game.
