Digital Gift Card Chargeback
Hello! A friend of mine wanted to gift me digital giftcards but didnt have a steam account so they had to make a guest account. Said friend did a chargeback on those digital giftcards and I'm worried about my future account standing. What will happen to my account? Is there anyway I can payback the money when the chargeback hits or add back the money to my steam account? I did end up using all $150 in Persona 5 Phantom X via in game topup and not any licensed games.

Typically your account will get restricted and then the chargeback will have to be reversed or the restrictions become permanent. You should just pay your friend the money and halt the chargeback instead, if not, just await for the Support notification to come in and go from there.

Well that would be an issue for Steam support.

Why did your "friend" chargeback the gift?

The other thing to understand a chargeback doesn't just take the money paid, the payment processor also penalizes the the store with fees and fines, so the total damage is probably quite a bit more than $150. It's why there's consequences for chargebacks, especially those made in bad faith.

Doesn't really how they were used. Depending on the circumstances I suppose you could be permanently banned from Persona 5 Phantom X. Your friend's FOP will certainly be permanently banned.

Ultimately whatever the consequences are you'll have to live with them, and ultimately you'll have to take it up with your friend who's harmed you by committing fraud. And it is fraud.

Chargebacks aren't just some kind of alternate refund scheme. It is a statement that you have a legitimate issue with the retailer and have attempted to resolve it and the retailer has improperly failed to resolve the issue and so your only recourse is a chargeback. Giving someone a gift and clawing it back with a chargeback is not an appropriate use of a chargeback, and that's why it's fraud.

They claim it was an accident on the banks end but I'm not too sure about that. We are working on getting it reversed before anything happens to either of our accounts. So if we're unable to reverse it before it hits steam, all of my in game purcahses will be removed as well?

Are all your games purchased by your friend's gift that they charged back? if the answer is no, then the answer to your question is no.

Restricting your account won't remove other legitimately purchased content, only that which was purchased with the charged back money would be effected. Your account may have some restrictions placed on it. But those restrictions won't prevent you from logging in and playing unaffected games.

It is possible for an automated bank system to be responsible, overly aggressive fraud protection or something. The bank should be able to resolve that, although these things can take time, so you may have to deal with some of the consequences temporarily until it is.
