To exit Big Picture Mode on Steam using a gamepad, navigate to the "Exit" button within Big Picture Mode and press the "A" button (or the corresponding button for your controller). If you want to prevent Steam from automatically starting in Big Picture Mode, you can disable this setting in the Steam setting
