Download Servers Impacted by Summer Sale?
Best explanation I can come up with for what's happening, seems that downloads aren't working properly. Keep getting "Corrupt Download", "No Internet Connection", and "Content Server Unavailable" messages.

Tried all the fix methods under the sun, but no luck, so it has to be a Steam download depot issue. Can uninstall and reinstall games, but after getting to like 77%, they just stop.

Using an old Steam client? Issue seems to only be with games with more recent updates/uploads?

To explain further, we recently enabled a new compression algorithm which is vastly better-performing, and will enable faster downloads with much lower CPU load on clients. It will also improve unlock times for preloads for users on SSD (for spinning disks, the disk writes are the bottleneck). This was good just to save CPU load but it is also necessary for the faster (> 1Gbps) internet speeds people have in some places now, and it also really improves the experience on the Steam Deck.

New content coming in to Steam is now being compressed with this algorithm; existing content will not be converted. So if you're on an old client version for any of the reasons discussed here, there will still be many games in the catalog you can download and play (so long as they are not being updated, or if you can pin them to a particular build using branches supplied by the developer). Unfortunately we can't support having the data in both formats for new content.

Some has win7 and that cant handle windows 10+ DL that steam only support now.

Also why many post has a you most have steam installed at SSD Spind disk is to slow.

we have seen as steam user with low disk space so steam switch to spind disk as defaul and that is a NO GO, and this is why free storage space matter you do not use last 200gb on any drev ever.

Why would a back end server change that happened more than a month ago only now start to affect me? The issue only started in recent days.

That's wrong there are people who have Windows 11, but their downloads/updates still won't finish.

Also what is 'Spind disk'?? Do you mean HDD disks?

Also you are wrong about needing to always have more than 200GB free space on SSD.
People with more than that free space are also having problems with steam downloads/updates.

That new Steam 'update' broke something in general when it comes to updates for certain games.

I dunno, could've been you weren't downloading recently updated/released games but now are ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I take it you are using an old client, so does the issue seem to only arise with games that have had a recent update/release?
How are things with titles that haven't been updated in recent months?

I ain't gonna try with games that aren't trying to update, but all updates do the same; get mostly of the way to being complete and then error out.

I mean not really. Steam pushes way more data during a DOTA2/CS2 update

Heck it pushed more data during BG3's launch

https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3015069725

For reference during BG3's launch Steam was pushing 3x the data (150Tbps peak) it has pushed in the past 48 hours (50 Tbps peak)

Are you still on Windows 7?

The rollout of the new compression algorithm doesn't affected current depots, only newly updated depots. Depending on the games you have and when they were last updated, you may not have started seeing the effects of this change until recently. Again, assuming you are on Windows 7.

Are any of you on Windows 7? Steam is no longer officially supported running on Windows 7, which means the client version running on Windows 7 is now significantly out of date. Unfortunately this means it may not support the content encoding of newer builds.
As Valve has warned, there would be a point in time where enough changes on the backend would start negatively affecting those on Windows 7. In order to continue using the service, you'll have to make that jump to at least Windows 10.

I am on Windows 11 with the latest version of the Steam client and over 3500 games installed that get regular updates. I am not experiencing any downloads or updates that won't finish. I imagine those that do have something else going on other than the Steam client having been updated.

Congrats. Consider migrating them to at least Windows 10 to continue using Steam.

It doesn't only effect people on older OS. There is someone on the Limbus Company forum who can't get the game's update to finish even though he's on Windows 10.
Not everyone can afford new hardware that new OS's like. I'm stuck on Win7 and that's just how it is. There's some piece of my PC's hardware that isn't compatible with any of the new OS's. It took me months to save up enough money to buy a cheap indie game, which I could have bought on itch.io and not have these kinds of problems. By the time I can save up enough money to replace computer parts, humanity will likely be wiped out in the coming technopocalypse. (It's not a discussion for here, but humanity having another 10 years or so feels rather generous the way things are going.) It'd just be nice if Steam/Valve would have a modicum of consideration for people that aren't a part of the the mass consumer herd. Like I could still be playing Cyberpunk 2077 without issue if the "NextGen" update didn't happen, the only thing holding back older OS's is a single driver for the new windows proprietary gamepad. It's anti-user/planned obsolescence BS like that which is hurting people. I don't even use gamepads, why should I be limited in product use because of a driver for something I don't even use?
