Issues with Downloading
Hello everyone,

I am having problems with downloading larger games. Right now, I am trying to download Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord, but the download is excruciatingly slow. SpeedTest says my UPLOAD is around 7.49, while DOWNLOAD is around 9.46. My PC is pretty high end and brand new, and I only use SSD.

Now, whenever I download smaller games (like Your Only Move is Hustle), the download goes by just fine. However, when I attempt to download M&B2: Bannerlord (which is around 50gbs), it says the download will take around 13 hours. No way it should take that much. I downloaded TEKKEN8 and MH: Wilds (both substantially bigger games) a few days ago, and the downloads took around 3, maybe 4 hours. This isn't normal.

I tried to turn off the write caching on my SSD - didn't really help. Should I contact my ISP? Am I being throttled? Is something else the issue? Help me out.

Thanks!

Yes, you are being throttled. This is done by all ISP providers on holidays, just like some places charge more for holiday prices. Depending on the country you live in, these holiday throttling dates can change. ALL ISP do throttling. They hide it in the contract. If they say they are not doing it, they are lying. You can call them up and ask them. Also, since it is a holiday weekend, the steam servers are being slammed, so that also can slow down downloads.

Consider this: If you went to a movie theater that advertises 5 dollar prices, they usually have a clause to charge more on "holidays". This is basically what your ISP is doing. They throttle more usually during holidays to save data on their end, because alot of people are off and using the same ISP.

Thanks for the quick reply man. I'll call them in the morning and see what's all that about. Cheers!

Most likely they refer you to the contact you signed up with them. That is what they usually do.

Wouldn't be the first time they're messing with the internet. Nothing is ever guaranteed, I guess.
Not all ISPs throttle bandwidth during the holidays, and whether or not they do can depend on the specific provider and their policies. Some ISPs may throttle bandwidth to manage network congestion, especially during peak usage periods like holidays. Others may have policies that allow them to throttle speeds at any time to manage traffic or prioritize certain types of data. However, some ISPs do not throttle bandwidth at all, while others may have more transparent policies about when throttling might occur.

While I am unsure what the definite issue could be, I ran a test for my SSD using CrystalDiskInfo. Says my SSD is 100% Good (refering to Health Status), and there seem to be no issues. Therefore, I conclude the internet itself is the problem. I can provide more info about my RAM or the SSD itself, but I doubt such things would be the issue. I am not a massive tech guy, tho.
