Recently, Steam pushed an update that by default makes it essentially impossible to turn off Proton for all games (I guess - the option disappears).

I used to have my library filtered to show only Linux-compatible titles, but now every game shows up, even ones you can’t actually play on Linux, like Destiny 2.

Before, I’d know exactly which games were running through Proton because I’d manually enable it, but now everything’s mixed together.

What do you mean? SteamOS thing?

On my end, Linux Mint, clicking the "Show only games that run on linux" (the penguin) icon shows any game you can run on Linux, including native games and games YOU have enabled compatibility for. You can always disable compatibility, use categories, or hide games.

I'm in Linux Mint too but the option disappears.
Now only is possible to choose proton version and it says "Steam Play is enabled for all titles". The option to opt-in/out proton globally enabled doesn't exists anymore.

Every game except shows when penguin filter is activated (Like Destiny 2 which never will run and I never enabled proton).

from what i've read, it can't be turned off now, however if a game has a native Linux build it will get prioritized over proton or you can select it manually in the game properties. If you click on the "i" icon next to the favorite button, at the bottom of the information window it says if it is running under proton or linux runtime.

This is extremely frustrating.

I've never been able to play anything with proton, either the game never opens or it runs with poor performance, even games that on windows I run smoothly or that on protondb are ranked gold or higher.
That's why on linux I've always left the filter on, because I only want to play native games.

For me, what they should have done is activate the option by default but allow us to deactivate it if we want, and preferably only be active by default on SteamOS.

This can and will cause frustration for countless people, whether it's because the game won't run (like Crash Brandicoot N.Sane Trilogy, for example, which just didn't open) or because it runs with horrible performance (like X-COM 2, which ran smoothly on Windows but crashed on Linux for me).

And another thing, I don't know if it's just me, but by default the selected proton is the “Proton Experimental” and that doesn't convey confidence, the name “Experimental” gives the idea of something in development, full of bugs and not ready to be used by end users.
