Yea, actually been happening since 2023. It is because of a defective nvidia driver file. It recently got worse though. It was never fixed. It started out only crashing ubisoft games, now it crashes all games.

It recently started effecting steam overlay (since apparently may for some people) too and every game. This is nvidia's fault. I reported it back in 2023 for them to fix it on their support forum, but they never did. Even ubisoft tried to fix it in their games.
Steam cannot fix this issue. This is on nvidia's end. You can try telling them like i did in 2023, but they did not listen to me back then. You might even find my forum post still from 2023 in the support forum.
Yes, i warned people back then to report it or it will get worse...well they never reported it, and now it got worse.
Umm..no. This has been a problem since 2023 for me. It has not been fixed for me yet. It also has gotten worse. Only way it will get fixed if people pester Nvidia to make a fix. I emailed and posted it on support back in 2023, but they did not fix it (this was Nvidia). Either they knew about it, or just did not care since i was only 1 person at that time reporting it. Either way, best way to get it fixed is to pester Nvidia since i believe the issue is with their faulty driver until im proven wrong with the coding.

Steam is not going to fix your pc if you have other ovaerlay that make interference with steam verlay
This isssue was past 2023, all depend on past pc build with IGPU and a a Main card. that dont like each other., more a minor issue back then, later a increased issue over many years.
Most pc user has accpeted Multi CPU cores, but how come then its Mulit GPU cards we do not re-think this isssue.
I think AMD and Nvidia look more like 2 kids that is so clueless and only want to Brand own Company.
There is PV with botah a AMD and Nvida card, so Intel IGPU card is not even there.
well maybe its a past outdate pc today, but whoi are we kidding here, Multi GPU card is the future its been said over 2-3 decads ago and yet we dont seem them GPU card with 2 slots expansion, more like people will not but a cheap gpu card that can handle web view's. i bet that was the plan in the old days, but today people have forget it.
So Nvida and AMD and Intel are equal to be blaim here. for lack or Multi GPU cards that should have a better team work.
And yes i know we are back at Multi CPU core in the past but that was the Original idea.
So to be brute you cant have a 3D game running or have another app that require huge Graphic handle if option is not there to telll app use that card, window only have default and game devs sux for not have own game config, some do many do not have this.
just uninstall your current drivers using DDU and install an older one using nvslimmer :
you do not need anyway all the craps that comes bundled with the drivers ....
and be sure that all kind of gpu acceleration is disabled on the steam client at the registry level before launching it

and if you need nvcpl ( nvidia control panel) because it does not install it on new driver, do not forget to click the button bottom right ( install nvcpl )

No you can't There is no logic according to steam in hardware or OS win10/11 or Drivers, you only try test with past driver if that is the issue, and ita here steam said Driver is not the issue, there are other things at each pc, and you also forget its actual only few people at steam that has it, steam thas 250 to 350 millions of steam user per day that do not have this issue.
We are not support here, we can only point at some option we other have know over many years

will not even call this 5, then its not a steam issue anymore.
This is well know issue from past with discord vs steam first in overlay and later Nvidia overlay.
There is post about and back then we struggle to ID it, then all did not use Discord.
Today most games is on a Voice chat app.

yeah, hello, problem with old drvers is also some games need them optimized driver, this is not that simple and go back use older Drivers.
I'm sorry to say it, looks like a own pc issue with whatever interference issue you now have. as OP try reach for help.
And do he even have BIOS and Chipset driver update. we do not ask people anymore, becauce most ahve app that do it for us,
Even some steam user do not update OS and use older steam client.
People need to update as they even have a choise in the first place.
just like a single player game, game devs has already fixed and people try avoide update for exploits or play a game with fix they might not agree on game devs did.
technicaly did people not just lost support then they complain later over game issue. yes they did, so is this so many steam user get caugth is pc is not update.

Even some few steam user reset or reinstall OS and problem was gone.
people have ignore all the apps later installed because they are not good in faulthy finding.
and if you notice steam will not help at interference issue.

so old drivers can't work with new games ? seriously ....
and i hope you're not seriously thinking that ....
anyway it issue is comming from 3 possibles ways :
- steam update
- driver update
- os update
and the 2 first are linked anyway, and knowing nvidia is well known to produce ♥♥♥♥ drivers ,a good advice would have been to ask "what has been updated before this issue " but yeah none are asking that anyway ..
there is absolutely no need to install all the craps bundled with drivers if you do not use it ...

Maybe you should read Nvida drivers update, they do fix and optimize them driver alot.
And youi also igonre what steam said, did you not, "There is no logic according to steam in hardware or OS win10/11 or Drivers," they have shootdown all possible ideas ppl have made tickets.
This look like a wide spread issue, problem is it's not,
You dont have even 50% of all steam user with thats is in millions, this is why it has ende where it is, and yes a pain in the butt for them that get effect by it, old new for past steam user that has already been though this.
