Let us add nicknames to people who aren't on friends list
This way we can make a note, we will see it when they post, etc. Its helpful because sometimes people change names and you won't realize someone is a user you've run into before.

It already shows up on the forums for friends like [Name(nickname)] So would just need to add an option to assign a nickname on their profile screen.

Good luck finding it out of 428 pages, checked first chunk of pages.

Glad to see you approve of the idea though.

Despite what it says on the main page about searching, that's only useful for finding answers, not for contributing upvotes to a suggestion, BECAUSE... ever since the new moderators that contract with Valve & get a green label, & are referred to as "members of Steam Support" took over, any topic older than about 2 weeks is considered a "necropost" and will get you infractions on your posting record.

So, via their reprimands, the new moderators & Steam Support have sent a clear message that searching is only meant to get answers and that responding to topics older than 2 weeks is A VIOLATION of Steam!

If you had posted a link to a suggestion that was made within the last 2 weeks, I would agree with you, however. :seewhatyoudid:

right? it's almost like anytime someone scolds someone else with "use the search" they're just being an arse.

and you're welcome, it's an affirmation forum init?

So ideally, the nickname function could be applied to any rando, people on your followed list, people on your blocked list, and people on your friends list (already implemented).

I approve!

Yep, best part functionality for it is already in place, so the change would be minimal to just expand the nicknames to allow you to do it to anyone.

I know I've forgotten why some people are blocked. A "jerk" tag or "scammer" tag or "freeloader" tag would surely help.

Depending on your settings, nicknames can sometimes leak when you quote people in chats (specifically if from the friend list setting cog, the first setting "Append nicknames to friends' names" is set to "OFF").

So you have to be careful what you're copying and pasting or screenshotting.

For this reason, it's better to use numerical codes so that if you accidentally leak your nickname that you have set for someone, they'll probably have no idea what it means, all they'll know is that you set some numbers for their nickname. :seewhatyoudid:

Do you have screenshots of this? I would like to see how this works mechanically.

Posting screenshots of chats to a discussion topic would (probably) be considered naming & shaming by the mods, so if you want me to show you / give you a demonstration, you'll have to contact me directly, which you can do either through the usual means or via the group chat at the top of my profile.

I might be temporarily away when you reach out, though.

It works like I described, though. If that setting that I mentioned is set to "off" & you copy a message from someone then type "/quote" and paste it, then it will have copy & pasted their nickname text rather than their username.

And whether that setting is on or off, if you post a screenshot to a chat or anywhere else that you take with something like the snipping tool or print screen, it will just show whatever is on your screen, which definitely includes the nickname (which is easy to fix if you slow down and dump the screenshot into Paint, set the right color to black, and then just delete the areas that you don't want people seeing but...)

You can actually use Steam's nickname functionality without adding someone to your friends/block list. And that nickname will be saved to your Steam account, you'll see the nickname on mobile, Steam client, other computers, ect.

Why the ♥♥♥♥ hasn't Steam been slowly adding features from this?

Like most features that people want, they rely on 3rd parties to do the heavy work for them.

Well hopefully this will be implemented since it seems like something that would be easy for Valve to do

Didn't even know that was a thing, intresting

already exists and works since the existence of giving nicknames.
https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/discussions/forum/10/3043858334649677578#c3043858334651891420

augmented steam, previously enhanced steam (discontinued) adds this in the profile menu, since more than 7 years.

on native Steam itself, this function is deliberately not easily accessible for non-friends and i wont put any hopes up that it will ever be.

Yeah the entire point is to have it available from steam, not from a 3rd party tool. Hence the suggestion for Steam to incorporate it.
