[Bug] Forum OPs have no character limit for edits
Mirrored from this topic, consider merging

I was able to break a thread entirely by dumping 1.8 MILLION characters at peak, and after subsequent edits, it doesn't load any longer.

What is known so far
  • Dumping about 120 thousand characters to an edit causes E502 L3
This also extends to My Comment History until a moderator deletes it!
  • Dumping an absurd amount of characters to an edit (confirmed with 1.89 million) causes the parser to generate an empty OP, but the page does load

Edit: examples removed due to breakage

If this is officially recognised, please consider reviewing other issues I outlined here, especially the last section.

Interesting.

Weirdly, dumping almost 2 million characters in an edit results in the parser breaking but the page does load, yet for about 180210 characters requesting the page results in Bad Gateway (E502 L3).

Here's a demonstration of a 1.8 million character edit:

I didn't set posting privileges in that group, but bear with me, they're there. It's just that the parser broke.

I just see an empty post though:

Preview shows characters (lots of a's), post itself doesn't and loads fine.

Yes, I'm aware. If I allowed posting from non-members, you could verify it by quoting (the parser broke and couldn't generate the page). I can let you try if you want to verify.

No, I don't think that's necessary tbh. Other threads over the limit don't load for me either, as you've stated.

Hovering over the threads (for previews) also causes noticible CPU spikes, but that might just be down to my browser.

Okay, I determined that at around 120k a 502 is thrown, and at an even higher bar it still works but the parser just gives up and generates an empty OP.

Might want to post this in the steam beta forum. Apparently that's the place to go for bug reports for the regular client (or client-associated problems, anyway) as well.

Cheers. I intended to post there... had my last hopes this subforum was checked by Valve employees to any extent.

It is, for all I can tell, but bug reports are mostly posted over in beta forum and I'd wager there is a higher chance of this being noticed/answered.
