STEAM SHOULD NOT AUTOMATICALLY UPDATE WORKSHOP MODS
Capslock because this is a MAJOR flaw on Steam's design and I legit don't understand how no one fixed this asinine behavior yet. Whenever a a workshop mod is updated, Steam usually auto downloads the new update without the user permission.

Guess what? This behavior can break multiple game's saves. Take Zomboid for example, right now I'm playing with a mod called Knox Event Expanded NPC , which requires manual installation inside the game's folder. Today a new update was pushed that will break old npcs, not to mention you're at the risk of bricking your save whenever you load mods that were made for different game versions (STALKER 2, for example), and Steam automatically updated the mod WITHOUT my permission, rendering my current save useless since the new mod update will break functions.

HOW can anyone think this is acceptable? It boggles my mind how we don't have any control whatsoever of when can we update workshop items or not. At the VERY LEAST we should have an option to disable workshop auto updates so we don't have to risk losing our saves without warning.

nope that is a you problem -> Game mod developer / mod publisher issue. This is not a steam issue, and they will not add in controls to stop any workshop mod or game update.

That is the whole point of the steam service, to keep everything up to date automatically ...
Workshop is not just for mods but for maps, custom characters, etc. All stuff that has a vital need to be kept up to date to secure working online play. There is a valid reason for workshop to be atomically always up to date as well as your case. Options certainly would be nice for power users as both use cases have merits.

You might still be able to work with the mod author or other users to manually download the older mod to work until such time as you die in your savegame.
agreed OP, there are many reason why a mod shouldnt be auto updated.

breaking/corrupting games saves, causing crashes, causes one of possibly many in a list (some can have a few, others 100's, even see people with 1000's) that causes issues and needs to be turned off one by one, to find which one is broken, among many other things, one can list off.

maps, assets and other such things, though different and still called mods, will end up in the same boat, when or if, said auto updates were to be changed, but thats a nothing burger, those have zero significance, to need to be updated the second the mod author updates them, as they dont conflict with other mods or the game in question, unless the game itself changes something drastic, that affects those types of mods, other wise... they simply "just work".

they need to hold back mod updates, exactly like they do game updates.

along with adding the "update all" button back, or fixing their current update queue, as you can drag and drop updates into the queue, to update one after the other, but... when dropping other updates into the queue, the one before it stops and makes the new one dropped in, start updating, rinse and repeat and you have each one, stopping and starting each as dropped in, its a decent system, but how its currently setup, is quite absurd, to say the least.

That was literally the whole point of the Mods workshop. To keep mods seamlessly updated.
Project Zomboid (the game you are referencing) is an online multiplayer game.
project zomboid, isnt just "online multiplayer", though it doesnt specify that exact wordage either.

Single-player

Online PvP

Online Co-op

Shared/Split Screen Co-op

Cross-Platform Multiplayer

anywho, is doesnt use any anticheat, nor do mods have to be updated immediately.

i also play it.

have a nice day

The mod make decides when the update happens. Their mod, their rules.
