Steam’s Category System Needs an Overhaul — Cloud Sync, Sharing, and Templates Are Essential
Steam’s category system is useful, but in 2025, it feels outdated. For users managing large libraries, multiple PCs, or sharing games with family accounts, the current system is frustratingly limited.

🔴 Key Issues:
Categories do not sync across devices via Steam Cloud.

There’s no way to copy or share category setups between accounts.

Every new game must be manually sorted on each device or account.

The only workaround involves copying sharedconfig.vdf, which is risky and requires technical knowledge.

✅ Suggested Improvements:
Cloud Sync for Categories – Automatically apply categories on all devices via Steam Cloud.

Import/Export Category Templates – Let users back up or share their folder structures.

Family Share Integration – Allow the option to apply the primary user’s categories to shared games.

Tag-based Sorting & Filtering – Allow multi-tag classification and advanced filtering within libraries.

As libraries get larger and more complex, proper tools are essential for organization. These improvements wouldn’t just make Steam more modern — they would vastly improve usability, accessibility, and cross-device experience.
