Access previous versions of a Steam title
It would be great if we could select an older version of a game to play. I play L4D2 offline and don't like the 2020 update.

There already is, buckaroo. Its called the beta branch, and devs themselves need to make use of it by keeping older versions of their games listed and available in that branch.
That's up to the developer to use the beta branch for multiple versions.

+1 Would be great if all games had this

All games do have this, its just up to the developer to use as they have to specify what versions they want available as Valve isn't going to do it as it could result in broken builds being made available.

I mean imagine if Valve made a build available that had a bug that corrupted saves or had serious exploits or glitches that could put your PC at risk?

Yeah and almost no developers use it. Maybe notify the devs that it's there more frequently? Perhaps when they update their game?

Most developers want you using the latest version, its not that they don't know about it, its that they don't want to take the time to set it up or deal with it.

I mean L4D2 is a valve game, so you know they know it exists, they just choose not to use it.

Yeah and it would be cool if they did. Some older versions of a game can be better than the latest version.

It is up to the devs.
Many choose not to.

Yeah, but again its up to the devs. Even devs who know about it don't choose to use it. Its not something steam can force. All you can do is post on the games forum and ask the devs
Interesting threads for you to browse upon for L4D2...

They aren't what you want but it is something you should read into.

:nkCool:
Steam provides previous depots for downloading using the steamcmd, but it is typically easier for users to bundle their old earlier versions of software and distribute that version to the friends they intend to play with (I guess since you play offline that's not really an option.). Finding the correct depot is tough work; they aren't going to be tied to the version number that you know. You'd have to match dates to news posts to stand a chance. Probably someone on the L4D2 forums has already done this legwork and can help... maybe.

Steam already allows this functionality; all they need is to attach it to a menu in the Steam client.

Which of the 108 unlabeled versions of Left 4 Dead 2 do you want to download?

Here's a list of them: https://steamdb.info/depot/551/manifests/

There's also instructions for how to tell Steam to download them on that page.

But you're not going to be able to play an outdated version of the game online. The dedicated servers are kept up to date. And you shouldn't play an outdated version of the game online either, because there are security fixes you'll be missing.

As already stated, they do, Sonny Jim. Try to keep up as you spam your +1's.

Devs already know about, Spanky. They don't need Valve to constantly spam them about it.

And that's up to the devs, Junior. It's their choice, and their choice only, as it should be. Go pester them about it.

The page where you create branches is literally the same page where you release updates on the public/default branch. Creating branches is higher up on the page, as well.
