Disable "big picture" rubbish
I just connected my wireless controller and Steam, for some reason, switched into big-picture mode.
How about we get the option to have steam NOT do that, and then dump us in a mode without an easy button that says "exit big picture mode"?

C'mon - why are you switching me from the interface I am quite happily using and then just forcing me into some bad mode that I do not want to use?

Likely some setting you need to check. Mine doesn't do that.

Steam doesn't do what you describe.

The only thing that comes close to that is pressing the guide button two times (one to focus Steam, and the second to start big picture mode).

You can disable it at Settings -> Controller -> 'Guide button focuses Steam'.
