Please consider adding UPI as a payment option for Indian users.
Hi Steam team,

I wanted to bring up a suggestion that I think would really help a lot of users in India — adding UPI (Unified Payments Interface) as a payment method.

UPI has become the default way of making digital payments here. It’s fast, secure, doesn’t require a credit or debit card, and it’s something almost every smartphone user in India has access to through apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, and others.

Right now, many people who want to buy games on Steam are either unable to, or have to rely on third-party sites or complex payment methods that often fail or charge extra fees. Supporting UPI directly would make things much smoother and more accessible, especially for students and younger gamers who don’t always have cards or net banking.

Other global platforms like Netflix, Spotify, and even PlayStation have already added UPI support, and it’s made a big difference for Indian users.

I hope the team can look into this. It’s something that could genuinely make a huge impact in how people interact with Steam in one of the largest gaming markets in the world.

Thanks.

Not that I don't disagree that another payment option is probably necessary in India, but when you say India is "one of the largest gaming markets in the world" what do you mean?

Because India is no where near the top 10 in the market either for revenue nor for number of gamers. So it's certainly not one of the largest, and if anything, it seems that, compared to other SE Asia countries, India is quite lacking in the market.

I’d like to sincerely apologize for the earlier misinformation I shared — I now realize that my source wasn't accurate. While it's true that India has a massive number of video game players, most of them are part of the mobile gaming community. The PC gaming market here is comparatively smaller, mainly due to the high cost of gaming-capable PCs.

That said, there is a passionate and growing PC gaming audience in India — people who genuinely want to support developers and platforms, but are often limited by payment options. One of the biggest barriers is the lack of UPI (Unified Payments Interface) support. UPI is widely used across India for everything from groceries to tuition fees. Not having it means locking out a huge number of potential users who either don't have international cards or prefer not to use them for digital purchases.

I won’t take up too much of your time listing every reason, but I do want to emphasize: this isn’t just a convenience issue. For many, it’s the only available option.

Again, apologies for the earlier confusion — but I truly hope this sparks a conversation about adding UPI as a payment method. It would make a real difference.

Thank you for considering it.
