Steam OS integration/installer baked into Steam
Hello in future releases of steam, can we have a steamOS installer baked into the upper right corner or steam settings under the music tab so as to be able to install SteamOS onto our PCs? Would be much helpful for people that don't know how to use ISOs and whatnot.

No. It's not front-and-center exactly because users don't know how to use ISO's or understand what SteamOS's scope is

Then what's the reason we don't have a steamOS installer baked in yet?

Because the number of idiots who would mistakenly wipe out their OS installation would be astronomical.

how would someone wipe their OS installation if there's no wipe button.... this is conceptual. I believe in steamOS, when it reaches maturation and supports both nvidia and amd or intel and arm processors should atleast try to put a steamOS installer button on the top right of their steam client or else what's the point of them even making it... nobody installs the OS because it has no limelight... this is the perfect method to get PC users to switch to linux

SteamOS will never have a quick install button in the client.

The average user can't handle such a thing.

A lot of people don't even have partitions unless they have seperate storage devices.
Anyone who doesn't know what "SteamOS" is, will just install it under C:\ - which will not only wipe your Windows, it will wipe everything on that partition; - Windows, Steam, your games, your personal files, including save games.

Also where on the top right? Right next to the big screen button people keep clicking on accident? System altering features should not be front and center.

The average user neither wants nor needs SteamOS.

I mean ubuntu had a windows installer called wubi that partitioned the C drive and users were able to keep their windows install too.... just wishful thinking for linux gamers. They stopped providing the installer for some reason but it was magic.

If Steam intentionally damaged your operating system's files, we would soon be in a world where Steam is no longer available.

They're not going to add a button to brick Windows to the Steam client.

What if they added an unlock to make changes button before the installer button can be pushed and that triggered the UAC Windows admin dialog. Or had family sharing admins only have the option to enable the steamOS installer tab?

Or much simpler, not include SteamOS with Steam. Seems to work rather fine.

There is no need for unsolicited advertisement for an alternative OS. Let the user handle it themselves. They should know the best way to handle their own systems.

Ya’ll sound like Microsoft employees.

Imagine if Chrome had a big button to install ChromeOS.

Just because something is named similar doesn't in any way make it desireable to use it or make it readily available to everyone.

If you do not know how to use an ISO, cannot be arsed to read installation instructions, and just want to click fancy buttons - you have absolutely no business to mess with your PC on a fundamental level such as changing the OS.

You sound like a Valve employee trying to push your OS. :conwayshrug:

The people who are interested in the OS, will use it. There is no need to do all kinds of "what ifs" on the issues attached to adding an OS to the Steam installer, when the easiest way is to not include it and let people manage things themselves.

Yup, those that want Linux are more than capable of getting it themselves.

Actually, including an installer as you suggest, which would cause harm to a system for a technically unsaavy user (hint: most average people in the world) is completely a Microsoft move, buckaroo.
