suggestion regarding banning
here is my suggestion: each time someone gets a ban, their steam level is cut by 1. if they are banned at steam level 0, it is permanent. that will prevent unreasonable permanent bans. it will also inspire users to be more careful, as they would not want their level reduced. though they can also cut levels by 2 or 3 for more severe bans and add a permanent ban if a user`s steam level ends up negative. i have gotten the idea from gamefaqs.

Yeah no. Not interested in a system that will favor rich people. People actually buy their way up the steam level already.

No idea what argument sparked this idea. But, it's a very bad one in my books.

While I’m for bringing back perma bans, this isn’t the way. Steam level and forum bans are completely unrelated, one tied to money spent and the other due to behavior. Moderation taking a broader scope in terms of context, prior bans and behavioral patterns to determine when perma bans are necessary should be enough
no argument sparked this. i just got an idea. perma bans is not gone. moderators ban based on emotions in many cases.

Never gonna happen. It's not the point of Steam levels.

I mean maybe they should just take a $1 out of your Steam wallet every time your moderated....

This sounds like something that would go poorly and turn into people just trying to get each other banned or try to gang up on lower level accounts. Bans are for punishing bad behavior, not a forum weapon.
No. :DukeExplosion:

that would not work. some people can simply not fill their steam wallet. gamefaqs uses a system like what i suggested.

All the more reason why it wouldn't work.

Your whole idea would not work. Put aside the fact that any private profiles show level 0 as it is, this literally would make forum bans "pay-to-avoid" where people with cash can just buy their way out of trouble.

Steam can't just take money from you arbitrarily. That's the kind of thing that could get them in legal trouble
I'd have to disagree. There's a huuuuuge range of Steam levels. One user could eat 10k bans and another only 12, if this was implemented.

In my opinion, if Valve wants to inspire users to be more careful, they should just bring back (unless they're still here) permanent bans and change it to a three-strike system. A day, a week, a month, permanent. With a sprinkle of community bans, if a rule breaking user is doing ban evasion.

But that's just my take on it.

I don’t see how this addresses emotional moderation. But I do like the idea of escalation reaching permanence automatically.
the moderators can likely see accounts that is hidden and only they can ban. many users keeps trolling and never gets permanent bans while certain unlucky users runs into the wrong moderator and gets permanently banned. here is another addition: list each ban for a year.

Quite often that's because they aren't involved in the community to know reputations and intentions. They're a paid, reactive force, not involved like the volunteer mods.

If your wallet is negative then you're permanently banned. Same difference if your profile is level zero for any reason. The similarities are such that if you can say one is a bad idea, it's because they're both bad ideas.

"Pay $1 to break the rules" isn't a great policy for upholding the rules.

Simply stop breaking rules or report posts that do break them. Valve has their own moderation that will moderate as they see fit, currently altering levels is not part of that.
