Its all sorted into collections by genre, the library can be filtered to only show currently installed games + you can favorite games to make them appear at the top.
You make it sound way messier then it really is if you put some effort into organizing it.
Subcollections and customisable flags one can attach to games (akin Outlook flags) would be neat as well.
That said, I have no issue using the library as it is for sorting my games and finding them. I mean, games I'm playing aren't getting "lost" in my library since I favorite them. That collection is always on top.
If people forget they bought a game they were playing for 5-10 hours, that's a people problem, though. Never had that in my life and I've been gaming a long time now.
