No thanks, I don't want every game I buy to clutter up my downloads list if I am not installing them right away.

Bad idea - sorry but auto-download of purchased games would be just annoying. Newly purchased games are shown at the start of your "Recent Games" line in your library anyway, so you can easily trigger their installation from there.

As an option I can understand it, but the default should always be OFF.

Considering you can have multiple steam libraries, steam prealocates space before installing a game and the potential of drive bloating that can result. I don't think this is a great idea.
