Add Option to Receive Messages Only From Friends (Stop Spam & Scams)
Hello,

I would like to suggest adding an option in Steam to restrict direct messages so that only friends can contact you.

Currently, users can set privacy for comments and friend requests, but there is no way to block unwanted messages from strangers. This leads to:

constant spam from random accounts

scam attempts (fake trades, phishing links, “Steam admin” scams)

harassment from unknown users

A setting like:

“Allow messages only from friends”

Or “Block messages from unknown users”

…would greatly improve privacy and protect users from these issues.

This feature would be especially helpful for new users and younger audiences, who are the main targets of scam attempts.

Please consider adding this in a future update. It would make Steam safer and more enjoyable for everyone.

Thank you!:steamthis:

You can't block friends requests.
And no one can post messages to you through your profile if comments are set to friends only/private.

Where do you have this problem?

We can block and report non steam friends steam members that post to our profile.

How exactly are you getting these DMs? I cannot DM anyone who is not on my friends list, and likewise have never received the same.

I think that you can get one via public group chat.

Which kinda makes sense then. If you're going to be in a public group chat...

Being able to block random friend requests has always been a good idea, though.

Certain games allow you to message players you recently played with. There was a patch note about this for csgo years ago.

It seems the OP is talking about Steam, however. I mean pretty much every mutiplayer game I have ever played allowed for whispers and DMs and such. Comes with the territory.

It was steam messages, https://blog.counter-strike.net/2018/08/20855/
– Allow sending a Steam message to recent teammates using new Steam chat.
This was quite a bit after they removed the ability to message people you had no connection to. There apparently is this window after you've played with someone that you can message them, but there are complaints about it being inconsistent going back many years .
