A Rewards Program to convince others to buy a Steam Deck
I’ve seen a story online where someone was playing a Steam deck and someone went up to them and asked what it was. After telling them what it was, that person was so excited and sold that he got a steam deck himself.

Many companies offer rewards when you recommend others to buy products especially in person. Perhaps Valve should create a referral program for players who convince other people to buy a Steam Deck or even other hardware and get some reward for doing so like store credit. That way you can sell more units by seeing the product itself and having players convince others to get one.

That would be illegal in some countries (switzerland f. ex.) because it would be akin to a pyramid scheme.

Valve doesn't need a referral program to sell Steam Decks. They fly out of the warehouses already.

And Valve also supports competition by making Steam OS available on other handhelds.

Not all of them as they’re perfectly okay here in the US.

A referral or "customers canvass customers" programme has zilch to do with a pyramid scheme and are commonly found.

You don’t even know what a ponzi scheme is. It has to do with investment, not this.
"PLEASE BUY STEAM DECK USING MY CODE: XXX-YYY-ZZZ"
The spam would be delicious.

just owning a deck is reward enough and they sell themselves without any referral links

If by "this" you mean referral programmes, no it isn't. As I said.
If by "this" you mean pyramid schemes, that's the common term for Ponzi schemes and they are illegal.

And yet so many companies have referral programmes, loyalty programmes, BTGOF programmes, ...
Seeing something you have to pay for as a reward is a very strange way of thinking and certainly doesn't help the company bootlicker allegations some regulars are regularly facing on the regular.

Person A: hey if you're gonna buy a steam deck use my referral code
Person B: Sure!
Also Person B: *doesn't use referral code, instead simply purchases the deck as intended,
*roll credits*
