Getting gamers to properly understand genre conventions is very hard. Even people who have been in gaming for 20 years still manage to have absolutely zero familiarity with genres, gaming history, and the conventions as such. Corporations love expanding gaming to audiences without that history, and trying to teach that history to new people is looked down upon by corporations and people who learn their value systems from corporations. The problem of getting gamers to recognize the correct genre of a game is an old problem and one Valve is not powerful enough to solve.

I've seen "action roguelike" used to describe this genre, and it's a tag on Steam.
