🇺🇦 Ukrainian City Names in Steam Profiles Are Outdated - Please Fix GeoIP Data (Kyiv ≠ Kiev)
Dear Valve / Steam Team,

Steam is still showing outdated and incorrect names for Ukrainian cities in user profiles.

Examples of the issue:
- Kiev instead of Kyiv
- Lvov instead of Lviv
- Odessa instead of Odesa
- Kyivs'ka Oblast’ instead of Kyivska oblast

These Soviet-era transliterations haven’t been used officially in Ukraine or internationally for years.
Modern databases, such as MaxMind, IPInfo, and DB-IP, already display the correct names.

This affects how Ukrainian users are represented globally. It’s not a political debate - just outdated data.

Please update Steam’s internal GeoIP city name mappings to reflect current international standards:

- U.S. BGN: https://geonames.nga.mil/gns/html/namefiles.html
- ISO 3166: https://www.iso.org/obp/ui/#iso:code:3166:UA

🗳 Steam doesn’t let us tag admins, but enough attention here might get this escalated.

Thanks for reading - and let’s fix this together.

I think the reason its outdated all around in a lot of subjects is that they pull the info from https://www.geonames.org/ (you can see that at the bottom of the page)
And not update it since, maybe its about time, but the problem is that will always be some what out of date except if they keep pulling, I feel that over all Valve just dont think it matters all that much what names really show there, or don't want to get into any possible politcal issue that can arise from updating as some places may be in a disagreement on stuff all around
Also meaning that they update now, may need to update again later, as things shift or change world wide

In the end its mostly a matter of how many really care about it to pull the action, and there where posts about countrys being out of date for years, but over all don't seem like it matters all that much for the majority of Steam

You're not the first to ask and not just for Ukrainian locations, so I'm fairly sure they are aware of the information being outdated.

My typical advice is to simply use the Real Name field to set a location to whatever you want, spelled however you want. No one should be putting their real name on their profile anyway. It's outdated field back when things like online stalking and harassment was far less prevalent.

If you look at my profile, I am apparently not of this world.

It's easier and faster to a resolution than waiting for the geolocations to be updated. Users have been asking for corrections for several years now.
