Birthday Discounts for Steam Users (With Anti-Abuse Measures)
Hi Valve/Steam team,

I’d like to suggest a feature that could improve the user experience on Steam: offering users a special discount or coupon during their birthday. It’s a small gesture that could go a long way in making people feel appreciated, and could even encourage them to treat themselves to a game they’ve been considering.

Here’s a basic outline of how it could work:

  • When users sign up for Steam, they choose their date of birth.

  • During their birthday week, they receive a one-time discount or coupon that can be used on a game of their choice, or from a curated list of eligible titles.

  • Games bought using the birthday discount would not be giftable or tradeable, to prevent misuse.

To avoid abuse or account flipping, here are a few possible safeguards:

  • Locked birthdate – Users can only set their birthday once during sign-up; it can’t be changed afterward.

  • One-time use per year – The birthday discount is valid only once per year, during a limited time window (e.g., three days before and after their birthday).

  • Minimum account age – Only accounts that are at least 6-12 months old would be eligible.

  • Purchase history required – The account must have spent a minimum amount (e.g., $10 total) to unlock the feature.

  • No gifting or trading – Games purchased with a birthday discount are permanently bound to the account.

  • Optional IP or device lock – A short-term lock could be applied to the account after the discount is used, to prevent quick resale.

  • Two-factor authentication required – Enabling Steam Guard or other 2FA would be required to redeem the offer.

This idea aims to build stronger connections between users and the platform without compromising security or fairness. It’s a light, personal feature that could boost engagement and goodwill.
This idea also requires no ID verification while privacy is preserved, even in light of recent regulations like the Online Safety Act[www.legislation.gov.uk].

Thanks for taking the time to read this. I hope it’s something the team might consider down the road.

For readers who support this idea:
  • Share your thoughts, improvements, or other ideas in the replies.
  • Consider submitting similar feedback directly through Steam Support.
  • Developers and publishers: would you opt in to allow your games in a birthday discount pool?

For readers who are against this idea or have concerns:
  • Feel free to explain your reasons or criticism is welcome as long as it’s constructive.
  • Suggest improvements or alternative ways to implement it.
  • If you think this could be abused or is unrealistic, let’s talk about how to make it better.

    Thank you for your time.
    Sincerely - triz.

And who pays for this?
The tin cup continues to rattle.
Or, I have a better idea; wait until a game you want is on sale for a discount you agree with. This may require immense amount of patience to accomplish.

Are you aware of how many accounts there are on Steam?
If Valve did something like that I'll bet many people would create 50 extra accounts.

Valve is a business, not your family or friend.

/Have a great day.

Developers, publishers set the prices for their games including when they go on sale.

Partners on Steam are responsible for setting and managing pricing for their products.

Wishlist that game or games and wait for an email notifying you of a discount.

Birthdays are once a year per steam user
As of April 2025, Steam hosts 154 million registered active users, with an expected active user base to cross 160 million by the end of 2025. On a daily basis, the platform sees approximately 13.2 million active users globally,
Never going to happen
You can have 10% off any free game I've released on Steam for your birthday.
Not going to work even if publishers agreed to it, as your attempts to stop abuse are easily got around.

You CANNOT do anything with limiting IP addresses as it prejudices people who have changing IP addresses through their ISP.

On top of this, anyone can create a Steam account, and that includes making MANY Steam accounts.

Dead easy to make one account for every day of the year and reap the rewards.

So sorry not going to happen even if the miracle of getting publishers to agree to this would happen.
