Option to automatically update check every hour
it seems that currently "let Steam decide when to update" basically means only check when you log in.
I just had a very unpleasant experience of a game dropping a huge update 2 hours after I woke up, meaning that I connected to Steam at 7AM, saw no updates, tried to play a certain game at 9:30 and got blocked by a 30 minute update.
Unfortunately such incidents are so common for those of us living in APAC. Every developer lives about half an earth apart from us, meaning that their "prime update hour" can often be "just when we're daytime here", causing the failure of update checks on log in (= when you boot PC first time in the morning) to actually catch the update.

Steam is periodically checking throughout the day for updates. It doesn't just check when you log in. As you described, it's more likely just bad timing because of where you are at in relation to when a developer decides to drop an update.

well it does give updates a few times in a day, I'll give it that, but that's just not good enough. I am still far too often greeted with a cockblocking huge update exactly when I want to play.

Think about it, some games have very short sessions, could be less than 15 minutes. And when you have a 30 minute break and want to play, only to get blocked by a 20~40 minute update? I'm pretty confident I'm not the only one who find that annoying.
