i7-6800K Vs. i7-6700K
So its 6 cores Vs. 4 cores and a price dif of $110... Is it worth it? I'm starting to see evidence that 4 core CPUs are bottlenecking my GTX 1070 in games like MAFIA 3. Sure that game it horribly optimized but still. If I'm going to upgrade from an i5-4690k should I even bother with the 6700k? Should I even upgrade at all?

Can you post a FRAPS 60 second benchmark summary of Mafia 3?

For gaming purposes, absolutely not. A Broadwell-E will look good for benchmarking though.
The .log file...

I'm gonna give you heads up about this whole i5 vs i7 and 4 vs 6 cores.

Most games use only about 2 - 4 cores, making that i7 6800k a bad idea to go for, but at the same time, would be great to have because you have two cores that not being used, that you can use for your streaming. Keep in mind, you can do this just as well with the i7 6700k or even i5 6600k.

Now the thing is you will get better FPS when comes to i7 6700k over the i7 6800k because of the base and turbo clock speeds, and again most games only use 2 - 4 cores, very few games use more than 4 cores, and it's not a trend yet, but maybe in year or so, more games might use more than 4 cores. But as of right now the best overkill CPU atm is the i7 6700k, which you can easily over clock to 4.4ghz or 4.6ghz if you water cool it.

Outside of gaming, such as editing or rendering, i7 6800k would have a bit of a lead, only by a bit, not much, which makes you wonder was it really worth that extra $110. Short answer is no, also if you do like 4k editing, you can do it just fine on the i7 6700k without a problem.

Maybe these videos will help you under stand a little more.

Now for bottlenecking GPU, no the i7 6700k won't bottleneck the GTX 1070, or even the GTX 1080, it's only when you start to SLI 2 cards that you may see some fewer FPS than the i7 6800k, but other than that it's only about 10FPS at most depending on the game as well.

Mafia 3 isn't good game to benchmark on as it's was just a poor port of the game, and didn't start getting patches until the whole community called them out to fix it. So I wouldn't recommend any videos, other than seeing how they can run well before buying the game atm.

for gaming, 6700k will beat the 6800k

games need fast cores not more of them

if you have a 4690k, its pointless to upgrade for gaming
just get a better gpu

Mafia 3 has patches in the pipeline to address performance issues.

I have an i7 4770k and honestly, as much as I want to upgrade (just because I love building pc's) I know it'd be a waste of money. The gain is negligible and the cost is substantial for such a small performance gain.

For a pc made strictly for gaming, until your cpu becomes a bottleneck, there's no sense in replacing it.

you still have a fantastic cpu i have it with 2 gtx 970s and it runs almost all games at 144 fps ultra (overclocked to 4.4)

I've heard a lot of problems with mafia 3. if this is apparent in other games then it's a bottleneck if only this game then it's a optimization problem.

The 4690k is enough for Mafia III, though an upgrade to an i7-4790k on the same motherboard will boost performance in CPU-heavy games like The Witcher 3 (where a mid-range i5 bottlenecks a GTX 970).

the witcher is one of the very few games that will the extra threads the i7 provides it really isnt worth it anyway to go from a highend i5 to i7 of the same generation

Now 6 cores cpu become standard. So it's good to use this cpu in 2025.

thanks for bumping a 9 year old thread
4 cores was standard 10 years ago, now 8+ cores

Why necro a 9 year old post?

For starters i7 6800k has no support for windows 11, only work around has to be done, and may encounter drawback, or problems come from it. Another thing within last few years CPUs that 6 cores beats i7 6800k in both IPC and TDP. On top of that i7 6800k is going be a bottleneck for high end GPUs that release within last few years.

Once again this is over 9 years ago, I stated clearly in due time more games will use more than 4 cores, which right now standard is 8+ cores depending on said modem game title.

There is no standard number of cores anymore. Years ago 6 became a recommendation because quads weren't cutting it, mainly due to low thread speeds. But that was years ago and things have changed. Cpu design has improved markedly. It's all about matching your hardware to your usage requirements as the i3-14100 quad videos below show.
