Win 11 defender update might corrupt ssds
Probably nothing just an fyi.

https://www.techpowerup.com/340032/microsoft-windows-11-24h2-update-may-cause-ssd-failures

Microsoft issued a Defender security update as part of the August 2025 Patch Tuesday cycle to counter the Lumma stealer and similar malware and exploits. The Windows 11 24H2 cumulative package KB5063878 was included in that rollout. Early deployments returned an installation error, 0x80240069, which Microsoft acknowledged and later addressed. Community testing has since identified a reproducible pattern in which certain SSDs, when running sustained sequential writes of approximately 50 GB, become inaccessible and display unreadable SMART telemetry. Follow-up analysis and vendor feedback to date primarily point to solid-state drives, although conclusions about traditional spinning hard disk drives remain unconfirmed.

And most Defender Updates are forced updates as well.
I'm pretty sure if this does affect people it'll be a miniscule amount of people.

Much like every other claim that Windows will destroy your PC in some way but you never ever hear of it and it only seems to be Linux users that loves to spread it around.
mine is working with defender for windows 11 home.

when do i have to use different software, please!?!?!?
Jayztwocents made a video. Has an uninstall instruction section. Instructions at 7 minutes 40 seconds in the video.

Apparently it seems to affect certain Samsung 990 SSDs, but it may be that certain optimizations may be triggering a firmware bug.

Other than triggering a firmware bug, there isn't much the stornvme.sys driver can do to the SSD without getting into management modes.
its nice that ms forces users to be the beta testers with forced updates

gg win 10-11 users
looks like Phison controllers are most affected, with some WD SSDs also biting the dust

a Windows update bricking your SSD is quite a big deal, i wouldn't dismiss that just because "it doesn't happen to everyone"

help???
Win11 M.2 SSD bug and Win10 Net Framework error.

What a time in the life for Microsoft.

I would also like to ask if this pertains to the Samsung 990 Pro Plus or the newer 990 Pro?

And does this pertain to using it as a storage drive and/or an OS-only drive?

Luckily, I saw this before purchasing that 4TB 990 Pro I saw on sale last night.

please? what makes my last question stoopid?
anyway:
Unistalling the win 11 security update switched my default browser and did some other stuff. Uninstalling does cause some issues. Ended up reinstalling it. LoL
