My newly build PC just died and IDK what caused it
Hey people! I was just watching a movie on my computer and downloading some mods from Nexus, but suddenly my screen went black but the system power and everything was on and a light is showing on motherboard where it’s written CPU. Might it be that my CPU is dead? I tried it on a different motherboard and same issue, the CPU not even getting warm.

Motherboard: AsRock B650 Steel Legend WiFi
CPU: Ryzen 9 7900X
RAM: Corsair vengeance Ddr5 6000mhz 30CL
PSU: Lian Li Edge 1300w platinum
And a 500gb WD SN7100 M.2 SSD as windows drive

Might it be the mod that I downloaded had a malware that caused this? Because the computer was working fine until I downloaded it, and suddenly my screen went black, I tried resetting Bios by removing CMOS battery and it didn’t work, I put the CPU and other components on a MSI MAG B650 tomahawk motherboard and same issue, and the CPU LED lamp is on and I only get black screen, everything else like fans and rgb working. What other steps should I take?

Won't be the mod which caused your hardware issue. I can say that much.

Sounds like the CPU had a fault judging by what you said. You could speak to the retailer you bought the cpu from and ask them about a refund or replacement.

I doubt the cpu is bad. Just downloading something also doesn't do anything. BTW I have the same MSI MAG B650 Tomahawk motherboard with a 7900 (non-x) and it's a good board, I think.

Try the CMOS reset thing again but make sure that it's unplugged from the power outlet and while it's unplugged with the battery out, hit the power button on the pc a couple times while you wait for a minute or two. Not sure if you missed the button tapping part or any other part, but I'd like to hear you do it just like that and see if it makes a difference.

I did all of that and on both motherboards, it seems the CPU is completely dead and I’m afraid my AIO has caused the issue by it’s pump dying, it is a very cheap AIO from a brand that I won’t tell because I don’t want to sound dissing any brand, but now that I checked through and realized the pump making 0 sounds and it seems it’s dead af… probably it killed my CPU :(

You gonna buy a new cpu?

Idk, I will take it to the retail and see what happens… now that I come to think of, when the CPU overheats, should it not shut down the whole system? Because of the build in feature idk is it called prochot ? Or something… I did not get a system shut down, just a black screen with all fans and motherboard still running

did you update bios right after windows install?

Yes
Would be weird if it was in fact the CPU. If it did die of heat-stress you likely would have noticed some intense throttling leading up to that point.

A CPU should theoretically function for quite a while in that state. It still had passive cooling from the water block itself with heat dissipation by way of a stagnant water pipe.

I would have put my money on a BIOS or motherboard issue. A lot of modern motherboards don't strictly support rated ram speeds out of the box, but you said you already flashed it.

It might still be a PSU/Mobo issue. Something worth testing if you have the spare parts for it.

Water cooling is a must. If its good for a car its good for a cpu

if the cpu is throttling itself, due to heat, incorrect drivers can cause the crash
but it should turn off and back on again

get the correct drivers from the mobo mfg site
https://www.asrock.com/MB/AMD/B650%20Steel%20Legend%20WiFi/index.asp#Download
chipset, audio, bt/wifi, lan

Overvoltage. Bad boost?

Warranty it doesn't hurt to try

did you reset bios to defaults?
using clr_cmos jumper, you only need to short it for a second or two
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

I think it is because of the AIO giving me the red light on both motherboards, I don’t have any other cpu cooler to install on any of the boards… lmao I just left the MSI Mobo and CPU plus my ram at the retail, if they connect a new cooler to it it may work and mobo stops showing red light on cpu. How embarrassing for me it would be if that is the case omg

newer cpus can run without a cooler

they will throttle low enough and still run fine, they will hit and hold 90-100c but not crash or lock up the system

its not the aio giving it problems
