Which processor?
Greetings friends! I'm looking at a new rig, primarily so I can play Dark Ages, and other titles already in my library at high quality. My choice (budget) has afforded me 2 possibilities for processor, and I'm wondering which one would be the better one. I lean a little more towards AMD these days, but my choices are:

Intel Core Ultra 7 265F

vs

Ryzen 7 7800X3D

The intel one is air cooled.

Any input much appreciated.

AMD all the way, Intel sucked for the last however many gens now.
What do you mean Intel air cooled? Is it a prebuilt PC?

Intel is good. After market water-cooled is best.

Amd is supposed to be better but I don't know. As I haven't followed media for a while

Yeah, it's the Slate 9 from ibuypower. The model has those 2 chips I listed as options, caught me off guard that intel is air cooled as well.

I can't bad mouth Intel, either. This would be my 3rd rig from ibuypower, my first one I bought back in '11 had an i3-550 lol. Runs Windows 7. I still fire it up every once in awhile to play games my "newer" rigs won't.
Intel still pushing that efficienct core scam, I would go with AMD.

Time to take the plunge in to the deep end dude.

Oh, believe me, if I had the bread I'd probably be browsing machines from Alienware or Origin. But as it is, at $1600 US, this thing is already worth more than my vehicle. Honestly, I'm not looking for the best at the moment, anyway. I'm just looking for capable and dependable.

Also, I'm not one to have faith in myself to build my own rigs. I'm liable to mess something up, my luck is so good. lol

That's what I mean, it's just like Lego probably easier than some Lego builds.

I get it though if anything goes wrong you can just send it back vs troubleshooting.

Last summer, I tried fixing my flatscreen. You know, just as a project, to see if I can do it. A flatscreen tv is arguably more simple to work with. After replacing all 3 main boards with new ones, still no picture. Replaced all the internal ribbon cables, still no dice.

Finally sent it to someone who knows electronics (nice to have an electronics whiz in the family), the backlight was out. Now, I could never replace that myself anyway, but you have no idea how much cussing I did, just trying to troubleshoot that. Think I may have actually invented some new cuss words in the process. lol

What are the rest of the specs?

Generally speaking, the core ultra chips were a bit of a 'meh' performance wise with 14th gen still being the go to Intel option.

If you just want plug and play, the AMD option will probably suit you better, Intel needs tinkering to shine.

Intel is also going to be offering an E-core-less option with Core 5/7/9 CPUs on LGA1700, they're set to announce Bartlett Lake on the socket sometime this year

Hi, Monk. it has: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5060Ti 16GB
32GB DDR5 RGB 5200MHz (upgrade to 64 gb 6000 mhz in near future)
And a 1 tb SSD, but I'm going to add at least a 2 TB Samsung also.

Otherwise, I think it's alright? All I want to do is play Dark Ages (at least when a sale hits) and other games in my library at a high quality. If Dark Ages runs 60 fps at 1080p, quality settings cranked up, I'll be happy.

My old FX 8350 with a GTX 1060 needs to be retired and for me, this is going to be like, alien tech or something.

The ryzen system seems the better option overall.

As gir memory, if its just for gaming, you don't need 64GB, 32 is fine, 48GB in two 24GB dimms if you really want more, but you should ideally try to get something around 6000 cl28 to 6400 cl30 for a sweet spot for AMD, beyond that there aren't really any gains to be had and the price shoots up.

5060ti 16GB is a solid card and should easily get you what you are after.

The memory seems the only questionable area tbh.

Though I feel I should ask, how much is it and have you considered building your own?

I know I'm sounding like a broken record here, but, if you aren't buying the latest gen, second hand can save you a bunch more money which could let you step upto a 5070/9070 maybe even a ti / xt or a 4080 s / 7800xt and there are places that you can still get a warranty on second hand parts.

Im using second hand cpu, memory and mobo and even my 4090 was technically second hand (had delivery damage and was over £800 cheaper!).

Anything less than 6000 MT/s for DDR5 is pointless, especially at higher latencies

The 200 series ultra processors are a downgrade from raptor lake, and the 7800x3D was overall better than even the 14900k. The 7800x3D should even smoke the 285k. The 285k only just about scarcely performs about the same as a 5700x3D[gamersnexus.net], and while I am not sure where the 265f falls, that's mostly due to lack of interest since it would assuredly fall even lower down than the top of the line processor of its generation.

Making matters worse, LGA 1851 is also rumored to be a single generation socket, which would mean you don't have an upgrade path to future processors. You might as well buy dead platforms like LGA 1700 or AM4 to save a quick buck, over an LGA 1851 socket motherboard.
