Will I notice just upgrading GPU for now?
Currently have gtx 970 and i7-4790k

I mostly just play CS2

Thinking of getting a rtx 5060 and eventually i5-14600kf or i7-14700kf not sure yet, but the thing is those cpu's aren't even compatible with my motherboard (Z97) which is annoying since I wasn't planning on replacing all that (I'm not great with pc building) and also funds are tight-ish.

Eventually I'll get around to the board and cpu but my question is, is there even a point in replacing the gpu atm or should I just wait? Surely I would still notice a difference right? I could be wrong but I think it's my gpu that is bottle necking in CS2. Frames were so much better in GO.

If I could just order the gpu and slam that b**** in there for now and see some more frames that'd be great lmao

save up for a new build

5060 has 8 pci-e 5.0 lanes
will be down to x8 3.0 with the 4790k

it is a faster gpu, will get higher highs when not cpu limited, but lower lows when loading stuff

for a cpu, wait for the next gen of intel u series and board

z97 was for 4th gen and its refresh (4690/4790)
it will not work with later gen cpus

Could you ELI5? Does this matter?
And why lower lows? I would understand same lows and higher highs. Also I’ll be getting the full build eventually anyway, will probably just get the card before the rest to see if it helps in the meantime. Like the map train and inferno are unplayable atm, which makes me think it’s my gpu that’s the main issue

it would take longer to load textures/models and scene info than the 970 could, since its using 8 lanes instead of all 16

if not much is changing, it can give higher fps as long as the cpu wasnt holding the 970 back

imho, save up for a xx70 series gpu, they have all 16 pci-e lanes available

I don't think I need something like a 5070 just for CS2 though? Seems like overkill and the price difference is huge where I'm at, 5060 is cheap right now here. Idk much about these PCIe lanes but from what I read having 8 vs 16 lanes might only result in like ~1% fps difference in most cases.. and 3.0 vs 4.0 might be a 5-10% difference which isn't a huge deal for now until I upgrade motherboard. Do these numbers sound accurate? Seems worth getting the 5060 now. I'm losing my mind with this 970 on train and inferno xD :slscream: Since it's map based it makes sense it's the gpu that's the main issue not the cpu right? Like on mirage my fps is good for the most part. That's my thinking at least.

Just found a vid, CS2 on a 4790 and a 3080Ti, you should be good for around 200FPS on that CPU in CS2.
If you stick a 5060 in you will be just fine.

If your PSU is as old as the whole system I would consider a new one to go with it.

Maybe time to hang up the party hat.

Awesome thanks! PSU is 750w should be good :cozybethesda:

Funds aren't actually "tight" I just don't want to sell any of my investments because I think they'll grow a lot really soon and want to keep putting every dollar into that, but losing my mind playing CS2 lately lmao my rank is really being held back by my fps

From about the 30 series power spikes in GPU's wen't up by a big factor, new ATX3.0/3.1 PSU's are made to help with this fact so if you do have problems it could be the cause.

That said it's a 5060 not a 5080/90 so probably fine but there is a chance your PSU might not like spikes like that whatsoever, is it a good brand? Seasonic, EVGA, Corsair ect
change your pc and buy a 7800xt

I have a i7 4790k and a MSI gaming 5 z97 motherboard with a MSI 4060rtx nvidia.

Works great and I get 100fps

Rosewill? :killer: lol no idea if good or not, maybe not. Why would brand matter so much?

NOICE :cozybethesda: but like 100 fps when alone on mirage? Or 100 fps 10v10 on inferno with smokes everywhere? Lol huge difference ;p and do you OC the cpu?

rosewill is newegg house brand
very mixed bag, some chinatek, some seasonic designs

4690k was a very good cpu for a long time
but after 6-8th gen, they were getting outpaced in more demanding games
You'll want to avoid the 13th/14th gen Intels as they are flawed and die. Literally.

Well let's see how a 4th gen intel cpu holds up with a 2025 gpu LMAO

I'll never understand such bottlenecking.
