What to do with a brand new unboxed 4090?
For many reasons, I have a brand new unboxed Aorus 4090 master that's never been used or even taken out of the electrostatic bag. It's about 2.5 years old. I don't even know what it looks like, except for pictures and video. I do know it's a beautiful gpu.

Work commitments and a lack of time are the mains reasons for it remaining in the box. Melting cables was another, but I was less worried about that. I also didn't realise what a stonking combination my 12900KS and Aorus 3090 extreme is and the sheer longevity of this system.

I'm not sure what to do with my 4090. Should I sell it? The Aorus 4090 master is unquestionably a desirable gpu. I've got a i9 13900KS and a Tachyon motherboard waiting for it. This is the foundation for a great gaming rig. However should I sell it for a Aorus 5090? I must have one of the very last brand new 4090 in existence and I'm sure there would be plenty of buyers.

What would you do in my situation? Build with the 4090 and wait for the 6090 or sell it for a 5090??

If prices, are still up for 4090's where you are, cash in, sell it abd pick up the cheapest 5090 you can find, if not, use it?

I would not buy a RTX5000-GPU, especially not a RTX 5090. If you are worried about melting cables, than a rtx 5090 will only increase your Anxiety. 575W of peak power consumption on a connector that is rated for 600W of power is a recipe for disaster. On top of that there are driver problems. In addition, RTX 5000 no longer has the ability to tell hotspot temperatures.

The card could overheat due to a factory defect, and you wouldn't even notice it as long as the core temperature is OK. Gigabyte graphics cards use new thermal gel. I've read various reports that this thermal gel is leaking from many Gigabyte cards. This could, for example, cause hotspot temperatures to rise because the entire core is no longer covered. But you wouldn't notice it as long as the overall core temperature is OK.

Keep the RTX 4090 and install a fan that blows directly onto the power connector to prevent meltdown. You should also only pair the card with a high-quality 1000W or higher power supplys. So, it's best to use more expensive models from Seasonic, Be Quiet, Superflower, and other name brands. Additionally, you should use Reddit's PSU tier list and only use Tier A models. Even name brands have poor PSU models.

You should also be extremely careful when plugging the cable into the GPU; avoid sharp bends under any circumstances.
Unopened 4090's are worth their weight in gold.

Worth pretty much the same as any second hand 4090 now tbh.

Ignore this, it's clearly written by someone who has limited understanding of the issues, just maje sure the connector is fully seated, ideally use 8 pins on the psu end not the 12vhpwr as it is too easy to knock on that end.

A light breeze from a fan won't save you if you have a fault.

It's 2 years old, no warranty and no longer the top model, why would it be worth notably more than any other used 4090 really?

We are talking about some used GPU (never opened, never tested) from some unknown seller when YT and reddit is full of stories about resealed cards with removed GPU die and VRAM. It’s more of a gamble than a purchase.

Exactly, it's not hard to 'reseal' something these days, used is used and for the lack of a warranty, you expect a saving.

You mean the OP?

Kinda rude to think that.

So what?

Does the OP have anything special about them that would let other random buyers know threy are honest vs a scumbag (not saying they are)?

Put it another way, would YOU pay a premium for an 'un-opened' and un-tested 4090 with no warranty just because it's 'sealed'?

As I wouldn't.
That is not a normal 4090. It has enough power stages to put out 1200 amps and much better filter caps than other 4090's.

Waterblock it and overclock the snot out of it if you can keep it cool enough.
Resell it while it has value $900 yours

It's pretty standard and no faster than the cheapest zotac outside of silicon lottery, which could go in anyone's favour.

Cards are so locked down now it's crazy, the only real way to push them is if you can get your hands on an xoc bios.

Thank you for this considered reply. Actually you pretty much laid out how I feel about the situation. So I'll keep the 4090, skip the 5090 and get the 6090. I also feel the 6090 will require 2 12vhpwr cables. The new power supplies coming out his year look terrific. I'm gonna get a titanium class 1600 psu with 2 native 12vhpwr connections. Only the best will do, like the XPG fusion 1600w, Asus Rog Thor 1600w, Seasonic noctua edition 1600w and the Thermaltake TF3 1600w. I like the Thermaltake because they put a lot of effort into the flexible etched cables, the matcha coloured 12vhpwr cables and the 9 blade tough fan in the psu. In fact I replaced ALL my case fans with tough fans. They are brilliant. Which psu would you chose?

In an effort to keep everything running cool, I basically ripped apart my case and turned it into an open frame case. You bet, I've got my tough fans blowing VOLUMES of air at my Aorus 3090 extreme and the same will be true with the 4090 Master. As far as plugging the 12vhpwr cable I feel the thermaltake cables look to be the best of the lot.

Fontunately, because Auros gpus have ALWAYS been super reliable for me, or unfortunately because I wont consider another brand, it'll be an Aorus 6090 for me.
