New Laptop F1-F12 keys not defaulted as such
I just got a new Windows 11 laptop and it seems fast and great. One drawback that I noticed when gaming though, is that the Function keys aren't the default to F1-F12; they default to volume controls, brightness contronls and the like. The guy at the computer shop I took it to in order to get some work done to it claimed that they switched the default function a while back and now all laptops come that way. I was wondering/hoping that there's a way to switch it back, for all the F keys so that the regular press would register as 'the "F7" key, and 'the "F8" key' for example and the "FN" key will toggle them to 'volume down' and 'volume up'. If there is, I'd be glad to know how to do that. Thanks a lot!

Look in the bios for a setting for the function keys defaulting to standard behavior or Fn hotkey.

I really hope that computer shop guy was pulling your leg, because that would be as stupid as adding a dedicated 'copilot' key, or when they decided to switch to an ondisk recovery partition instead of external recovery boot disk, wasting precious disk space and making partition schema more complicated than it has to be.

You need to google your laptop brand and how to do it on your machine.

But you can try fn+tab, fn+ caps lock or fn+esc or if there is a dedicated button for such fn lock switch.
Go into the BIOS and disable the F keys being the media keys by default so you have to hit Fn+ F key to use the media features instead. Pretty much all Laptops been this way for about 10 years now where the media symbols are the default instead of the F key #
