Is 9mb/s a bad internet speed?
I’m paying around $50/month for it

I pay $100 a month for 500mb/s and there is a promotion right now to double it for $10 more a month but I don't see the point. It super fast and it's fiber so latency is like 12ms and upload is same as download.

In some places mine is considered slow though.

$100 a month for 4000Mbps is decent, I pay £40 a month for 1100Mbps

How do you test your speed?
Speed.net or something else?

I used the steam client to measure it. I have it set to megabytes per second not megabits per second

Steam isn’t always good for that as it doesn’t simply download games but also decompresses and installs them at the same time.
So depending of your hardware it can show much lower speed that you actually have. Or even super bad if your cooling can’t handle 100% CPU utilisation during that process when combined with a fast broadband.

Speed.net is probably the simplest way to test download/upload speeds. Then you can compare to steam speeds if it’s different and if your hardware is a limiting factor.

steam downloads are not just downloading, its also installing, that takes alot of disk access and cpu

test download/upload speed with speed test sites
Speedtest got me 74mbps dl and 13mbps ul. That’s absolute trash considering im on a 300mbps plan. I’ll chase up the monopoly isp and see whats what

Make sure you also test it when wired and not on WiFi. This also can be a big bottleneck for many people.

are you using wifi, that may be limiting it
or it could also be the router if its older

even routers that have gigabit lan and wan ports and support wifi n/ac might not be fast enough to pass through internet over 100mb/s

you said you had 9mb in op post. don't mix units like that.
megabit is written in lower case (mbps), megabyte is written in UPPER CASE (MB/s). there are 8 bits in 1 byte
