Audio device missing after driver install
Did my monthly windows cleaning and updating.

Reinstall of nvidias app + the 6/22/‘25 game ready driver caused my headphones to disappear from the list of input/output devices.

I’ve never had this happen before.

I also had more to say here but I’m extremely confused. If this is an easy fix please, let me know.

grab all the drivers from the mobo mfg or oem site

never use windows update for drivers, it grabs generic that cover a wide variety of hardware, never specific to the hardware you have

Indeed it was an easy fix, so easy in fact after all of my updating and formatting a quick power cycle fixed it. Lol, oops

still get the correct chipset, audio, lan, wifi, bt drivers from the mobo mfg site
Yes when you install GPU Driver or something like a DuelSense controller, or connect to a TV or Monitor that has Audio; the default or active audio device might be changed in Windows; it's not gone, there is a list.

Go to Advanced Audio settings in Windows after all drivers are install and disable the NVIDIA or AMD GPU related HDMI/DP Audio in the Playback Devices list; this will put a stop to it changing without asking.

If you connect a USB headset, then double check this setting to ensure it's the default or active device so it is used in all apps and games while that device is plugged in.

DO NOT hotplug audio devices during gameplay; this often will not work as intended.

always disable all unused audio devices in audio control panel

dualsense/ds4 and xbox controllers have a sound card in them, and windows will often set them as default when they are plugged in

windows will try to switch between the last 2 used, but always gets confused when there are more than 2 enabled
