Mullvad or WireGuard
With what’s happening in the world today I bring you a question formed out of pure ignorance, which is better?

One is a service, the other a protocol…

This I don’t know. Getting a mini computer second hand just for a vpn sounds really fun and beneficial I cannot lie

Remember when choosing a VPN to read the terms and privacy policy, properly. some companies will claim the service is private, whilst collecting and storing your data.

They are different things. Wireguard is a VPN tech that lets you self host. It's what some providers build upon (I heard NordVPN uses Wireguard, but I'm not sure). Wireguard is not a service, but you can use it to create your own VPN if you want to. Of course, then you have to be responsible for keeping it patched and secure yourself.

Mullvad is a VPN provider. Don't know if they use wireguard or not under the hood, but they will handle patching and security for you.

TLDR: Wireguard is good if you want to try and do it yourself. VPN providers like Mullvad are more convenient since you don't have to do it yourself.

Been using Nord for about 3 years now, no complaints, there was a period where the app was a bit sluggish for some reason but that got sorted, one feature I like is I can send friends files who have Nord over their network.

Could be I don't know much about the different ones, mainly went with Nord because you can find 2 year deals for about £60

I think it depends on the law of whatever country you're in also, I think they have to keep data but can claim they don't if not for them personally.
Not sure what OP asking.

Paid vs Free

Mullvad is VPN service, they charge a fee which is very low.

Wireguard is an app you setup your own VPN server which meant you're hosting the vpn service, which is why it's free.

Proton VPN is service can use service for free unlimited data cap, with 5 countries to choose from.

price means nothing. what are you on about.

If paid vpn service has came far enough to be as good as WireGuard you'd suggest Mullvad. If said services havent came that far than you'd totally be saying WireGuard. Again, what are you on about.

I wouldnt use proton. Just personally.

Re-read what I said because you missed the part I explain the BIG differences between Mullvad, and Wireguard.

Miullvard is a SERVICE, you use their app as well to config your network to using THEIR network.

Wireguard is NOT a service, it's an APP to setting up with your OWN VPN network, or to work with OTHER VPN service that meant working with Miullyard, proton, and etc...

Hence why I'm confused, because if you want to HOST your own VPN network you WOULDN'T be asking in the 1st place. So are you asking is it better to host your own VPN network, or to pay someone host VPN network for you? If no, and asking which one provide better service then clearly you're confused from your OP, because hosting your own network, and service yourself always going to be better if control, privacy, security is your main focus, hence you wouldn't be asking about 3rd party services.

FYI You can use wireguard with proton vpn.
