Looking for a very cheap but reliable 8-12tb HDD for daily use.
I'm in canada so i use CAD as my currency, and really do not want to have to import anything due to the cost. So i'd like to buy off canadian websites.

Anyways i'm looking for the cheapest ether 8tb or 12tb HDD that is CMR and is good for daily use, i'v seen some cheap high capacity drives but they are usually only good for cold storage.

i already have a few SSD's for games and what not but i'd like a big drive that i can mostly save videos to. I don't have a set amount i can spend, just want good,cheap and reliable.

thanks in advanced.

if you read the reviews, people are saying it's a used 5200rpm drive and that seller has a majority of 1 star reviews.

Amazon...
Guess you need to pay more then, at least this one has some other Canadian outlets selling too:

they may have shipped the wrong one, or amazon customers may have scammed and returned the incorrect one

ST8000DM004 = 5400rpm
ST8000DM0004 = 7200rpm

double check when you get the model number and make sure its correct, and not opened box
if any of that return it for another
what about this drive?
i haven't heard of this company before but the specs are promising, it's decently cheap, higher capacity and has solid reviews https://www.amazon.ca/MDD-3-5inch-Internal-Surveillance-MD12TBGSA25672DVR/dp/B0BGYV6B9V/

I'm using Seagate Exos Enterprise NAS drives at the moment, they scale well too, 16TB is a bit cheaper than 2x8TB, you can get 18TB for the same money, 5 year warranty too.

id stick to seagate, wd, toshiba, hgst(hitachi)
those you can actually warranty if something does go wrong, but data recovery is not included

Server Part Deals has some manufacturer re certified hard drives that may be worth looking at.
Is there any particular reason you're after a 7,200 RPM drive for a storage role? The "proper" ones (I'll get to this shortly) often have quite a price premium over their 5,xx0 RPM counterparts; costing somewhere in-between them and cheap SSDs, while only performing marginally better than the former. As a result, this price premium not worth it and 7,200 RPM drives have increasingly lost their usefulness in recent years in the consumer space. Generally, you'd choose either a 5,xx0 RPM HDD for its value per capacity (storage roles), or an SSD for performance.

Be aware that many of those seemingly good prices on 7,200 RPM drives on Amazon are usually one of two things, if not both.

They will be labeled "recertified" or "renewed" drives (or otherwise omit to label it as "new", which should be your Red flag), which often means they were used in a server for some years and are now off lease, so they are trying to resell them. Worse, these resellers sometimes wipe the SMART data to hide that they are used drives.

Or they carry lesser known brand label (not a problem in and of itself) which may mean it is difficult to find out if they are SMR drives or not.

I couldn't find if that particular drive was CMR or SMR, but the 256 MB cache on a drive of that capacity and price point is making me think it could be SMR. I could be wrong though. it does claim to carry a 3 year warranty but I don't see a condition listed. Maybe I'm missing it.

As for the Barracuda Computes, they are SMR drives. At least the 8 TB capacity is. I have no idea about the 12 TB.

10+tb 3.5in hdd at 5x00 rpm or variable should be able to get close to maxing sata speeds

honestly im surprised they dont make them in hybrid, the ssd cache would help those large drives so much
