Maybe useful for off site storage.
Hit it with a sledgehammer and throw it into garbage. :tms_hammer:

no
laptop hdds are so slow
a 500g sata ssd is so much faster and they are dirt cheap <$30usd
or 1tb sata ssd is <50

you could use it in an external enclosure, but then you would need to be careful with it, since its a hdd and cant handle any gforce shocks, aka hard bumps, or drop it and its data is lost

ssd would be better in the enclosure just for data safety

for an extra internal hdd, get a 4+tb 7200rpm 3.5in hdd
or large ssd, 2+tb sata'nvme if the board has the m.2 slot
check the mobo manual to see what type it supports
m key = m.2 nvme
b key = m.2 sata
e key = wifi/bt nic

Hold onto it, and get a SATA dock if you don't have one.

You never know when you might have to do an emergency backup of your files, or a clone backup.

I will soon have to decide whether to switch entirely to Linux, stay with unsupported Windows 10, or do a clean Ghost Spectre windows 11 install. So backing up everything will be necessary.

more e-waste
Dangerous move as the drive could die soon and you lose everything.
Ask the original owner how old it is.
It’s basically ewaste, but could be used as a backup, or maybe a backup of a backup. A single backup is not always enough and definitely not on an old drive.

i have a pile of 2.5in hdds from old xbox and ps4
most 500g-1tb
xbox ones consoles have the worst records for hdd handling
1000s of power on hours and start/stops
they literally spin up every 15-30min to check for updates and spin down again
just murders the drives in them
i would not trust any of those for any use, esp backups
quick transfers between pcs is about all they are good for
I have a load of various old drives. They can be useful sometimes in maybe a home server.

Something like a pair/thee mirrored as s boot drives for a NAS.

Expect them to fail, so redundancy is a must whatever they are used for.
