Insane memory usage Steam Client Webhelper
t's bad, now Steam client webhelper is using 600mb of my ram and there's no way to stop it. I tried hard stopping using task manager and then it pops up again. Also I changed it so Steam doesn't start when I start up my computer. Also under library I changed the settings to low memory usage. Still in idle, Steam is using 650mb of memory. I have plenty of memory (32 gb) and an i7 with GTX 1660s. The only time I ever had anything use that much memory is with the antivirus BitDefender.

Anyways, if anyone else is seeing this problem where Steam is hogging up tons of memory just idilng, post below.

So, Steam uses about 2% of your systems total RAM at the moment and that is a problem?
What about the other 98%? Already clogged?

And those numbers are a problem because...?

I remember that at some point even a Valve employee said that its just allocated and not actually used RAM. Those numbers mean so little.

Exactly. RAM usage is a very dynamic thing. RAM can be used, RAM can be freed.

Yeah uh, not really a problem if youve been looking at stuff on Steam..

Just Exit and Open Steam again to reset the amount..

Still not a problem though.. Now if it starts using OVER 1GB, THEN start worrying.

Amazing to think that not too long ago, entire games didn't even reach that much ram usage.

And what would a user have to worry about?

*worry if you run out of ram
at that point background/idle tasks need to use pagefile for ram

a Memory leak perhaps?

Also you can force close all of the Steam Webhelper entries in order to free that RAM usage and it load up a couple new ones fresh with minimum ram usage and then switch back to the Client and start using it again. But yes just use for a few Steam only stuff don't need it for general web browsing such as with Steam Overlay inside a game. Better to just use your own web browser instead.

Mine is at 360Mb with the client open, and when I close the GUI drops to 236Mb.

My browser is at 300Mb as I browse this forum ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Because it's a stupid amount of RAM for a game launcher to be using?

Chrome always was a memory hog, so not surprised what's derived from it is just as bad!
