I've heard Valve has said that if Steam shuts down they'll give everyone a way to access their games without using Valve's servers.
More likely case though is that someone buys out the Steam service, rather than it shutting down (short of a natural disaster or something). in that case, new owner gets to decide what to do in case they shut down.
As long as the Steam client itself still is available for download and the servers where the games are downloaded from are still being maintained, we’d have access to the games we already bought on our accounts.
But I’m guessing if in the unlikely event that Valve goes belly-up, they’d patch out the requirement for Steam client to be on to start the games.
nah, once steam's gone then there's self-published games, (especially mmos), games on battle.net, origin, uplay, there's no escaping unless a meteor destroys silicon valley.
just a though.
