So someone is dying of thirst in Africa or wherever and it somehow invalidates my own suffering. Theres always someone worse off than yourself. Theres probably a person being stabbed to death while I'm typing this, does that somehow cure my depression? I don't get it.
You are correct technically. Of course it doesn’t invalidate them. It is not so much about “things could always be worse”. The point is to appreciate what you have and the things that depress you are often in your control to fix.
I often feel sad when I think about aspect of my life and how certain things didn’t play out, and it is easy for those feelings to consume you. But there are people born with permanent mental and physical ailment and those born into terrible situations/families that they didn’t get to choose that life. Meanwhile, I feel sad I posses few friends and my job is so-so. Something easily in my power to fix. My job is exhausting- if I put in the effort I can get a new one or go back to school etc. but whether I want to admit, those things are my own fault. You can’t win a game you don’t play. On a much more negative note it can also be perceived exactly as you said. Everyone suffers- so what makes your struggle special?
That is the point. It’s to reflect on your own situation in the grand scheme of things and recognize in many situations, you have the power to fix it, when others don’t have that opportunity and in some cases have trouble with just the very basics of life.
