Whose definition of *tolerance* are we using?

That is why there are very large issues with people being tolerant of others.

Tolerance and intolerance are not always good and bad respectively. It depends on the context.
For example -
Me being intolerant of someone blasting loud music in public transport is a reasonable reaction.
Me being tolerant of my abuser is not.

i used to like south parks take on this with the tolerance camp episode, but these days unfortunately i think that episode does not work so well any longer. peoples now are so openly, viciously intolerant and outwardly cruel that yeah, i do think we should not tolerate intolerance.

but i am not suggesting any real action against such peoples, as you cannot control human nature anyway. the only way to deal with them is to reject them. reject them as friends, as partners, from our families. these peoples unnatural, inhuman hatred is not compatible with society or humanity. they should be isolated, and allowed to continually isolate themselves with their own actions.

Simply, the ability to allow differences in opinions, lifestyle, and behavior.

We probably have extremely different ideas about that's right or wrong in terms of morals and politics. If either of us holds power, should we allow the other to speak their mind?

I agree more and more with that general idea. I'd say that one South Park episode still holds up though, if you separate the overall message from its original political alignement; basically, that tolerance has its limits.

Mr. Garrison shoving an animal up his assistant's ass lays outside the bounds of society's tolerance. By the same token, maybe society punishing open fascism is just a matter of self-preservation.

aye i do still absolutely agree with the "tolerance has limits" aspect of the episode. and the general message they talk about in the end that just because you do not tolerate someones actions from a specific group, does not mean you hate that group or think less of them.

The Paradox of tolerance says that a society should reserve the right to use violence, to be intolerant, towards those who would be intolerant against it.

What we see happening now, is one side claims, without evidence, that the other side is intolerant, and then attempts to use that as en excuse to use violence.

Lying about a group being intolerant should be treated as being intolerant in itself.
